Chelsea sign Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina for $30 million

Chelsea should have more options with the signing of Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. But was the $30 million that they spent to do it simply too much?

Chelsea have signed Spanish left back Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina.

The deal was confirmed on Transfer Deadline Day as Alonso, 25, is believed to have cost Chelsea around $30 million.

Alonso previously played at Bolton and Sunderland in the Premier League and the Real Madrid academy product has now returned to England.

In a brief statement on La Viola’s website, they confirmed the deal, while Chelsea announced Alonso minutes later with a quick video clip of what he thought about signing for the PL giants.

Alonso will likely battle it out with Cesar Azpilicueta for the left back spot at Chelsea but his arrival could also mean than Azpilicueta switches to his natural position of right back, allowing Branislav Ivanovic to compete with John Terry and Gary Cahill for the two central defensive positions.

Chelsea have moved plenty of defenders out during the summer window so adding Alonso, and potentially David Luiz, makes a lot of sense for the defense-minded manager Antonio Conte.
