We know that Major League Soccer’s All-Star match is headed to Sporting Park in Kansas City this year – but we remain in the dark about the opposition.
I am hearing that is likely to change in the next 10 days.
It certainly should happen soon; the league is a well behind schedule as these things go. Last year’s announcement that Chelsea would the opposition for Major League Soccer’s best and brightest last year in Philadelphia happened in early April.
Two years ago, Manchester United was announced in late March.
I am hearing there are quite a few teams still in the mix, including at least one Latin American team, but that Major League Soccer deciders are leaning toward one non-English Speaking side from Europe.
That would be nice, wouldn’t it. Chelsea and Manchester United over the last three years (Man U visited twice) have been nice and all. And they were certainly an upgrade over Everton, West Ham and Fulham of years past, as the U.S. soccer establishment celebrated its Anglophile roots. But Europe is bigger than the UK, right?
So … Real Madrid, perhaps? MLS leaders have long sought the Spanish giants, but have thus far been unable to close the deal.
