David Moyes is strongly denying that he called his Old Trafford booing by visiting Everton supporters on Wednesday “a (expletive) disgrace” after the Internet jumped on a Twitter user’s (!!!) claims that a chance hotel meeting had the Manchester United manager seeing red at his former Toffee backers.
Moyes was booed by sections of away supporters during Everton’s historic 1-0 road win over the Red Devils on Wednesday night as Bryan Oviedo’s goal gave the Toffees their first win at Old Trafford in 21 years. A Twitter user caused a furor when he Tweeted details from a post-match conversation with Moyes at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester that detailed the Manchester United manager’s calling Everton supporters disgraceful.
Thankfully, there are plenty of voices reacting to the defeat without carrying on about Twitter. The Telegraph’s Paul Hayward wonders what can be done about the lack of high-end talent and poor collective spirit of the club, noting that Nicky Butt has said Ferguson would’ve stamped it out already. Everton (and apparently Moyes) defender Phil Jagielka says the Red Devils let down their new manager in August. Metro’s Gavin Brown said the good will for Moyes can run out at any moment.
Moyes was celebrated during his time at Everton, even earning a guard of honour before leaving for Old Trafford, but relations have soured after some brash comments in August. Moyes said that if Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United had come for Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini while he was in charge he would have to let them go because it was “right for the players.”
Certainly Roberto Martinez’s stunning start as Everton boss has added fuel to the fire, but it feels like only in the PL can such a fuss be caused by a man on the Internet, whose claims were projected worldwide. The man has already deleted his Twitter account altogether due to negative feedback.
