New York manager Mike Petke laments Sunday’s loss

Mike Petke

New York Red Bulls manager nailed it when he said these weren’t a bunch of rookies who blew it late against Chicago.

Carrying a 1-1 tie into the final minutes Sunday at Toyota Park, just a few short minutes from sneaking out of Bridgeview, Ill., with a point in hand. (Which wouldn’t be bad, considering the Fire had missed a first-half penalty kick.)

But the defending wasn’t good enough in the end, and Luis Robles’ goalkeeping certainly wasn’t good enough. (He has questions to answer about the Fire’s first and third goals.)

Petke didn’t single out Robles. In fact, it sounds more like the highly experienced crew of center backs and midfielders who are on the hook for this one:

I’m very disappointed. We’re going to lose games, that’s inevitable. But how we lost that game … it was sloppy. The quality that we have, the experience that we have … if I’m with a team in a rebuilding stage, with players who are rookies in the league, how mad could I be? But I’m with guys who are capable of so much more.”
