Real Madrid have been kicked out of the Copa del Rey after fielding an ineligible player.

Denis Cheryshev scored the opening goal for Real in their 3-1 win over Cadiz in the fourth round of the tournament earlier this week. However, Cheryshev was not eligible to play in the match as he should have been suspended.

After picking up three yellow cards in the tournament last season while on loan at Villarreal, Cheryshev was supposed to serve a one-match suspension. However, he started in Real’s win against Cadiz, a side from Spain’s third division.

Real has said that neither the club nor the player were ever notified of the suspension by the Spanish Federation, and are likely to appeal the ruling.

Real Madrid has won the Copa del Rey nine times, most recently in 2014.
