Two quick, relevant points to make about Anderlecht’s final match in Champions League for the tournament’s 2013-14 version, a bid that splashed down with just a single point from group play:
Former D.C. United man Andy Najar started and went the entire 90 minutes for the Brussels club. It came as Greece’s Olympiakos rode out a comfortable 3-1 victory over Anderlecht, which was already assured of last place in the four-team group.
The lone goal for the Belgians? That came off U.S. international Sacha Kljestan, who now adds “Champions League goal scorer” to his personal CV.
There aren’t many of them among U.S. internationals, past or present. In fact, it’s a smaller fraternity than you might imagine at this point, with only Jovan Kirovski, DaMarcus Beasley, Maurice Edu and Jermaine Jones as members.
