Bergen signed a minor league contract with the Padres back in mid-March and has been released after posting a pedestrian 4.07 ERA, 2.01 WHIP and 27/25 K/BB ratio across 24 1/3 innings (25 appearances) this season for Triple-A El Paso.

Bergen, 28, holds a 3.96 ERA and 35/26 K/BB ratio over 38 2/3 innings covering parts of three seasons in the majors. He won’t have a ton of time to impress enough to win an Opening Day roster spot.

Bergen made 10 appearances with the Blue Jays back in May before being designated for assignment in July. The 27-year-old lefty spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Buffalo.

Bergen cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. The southpaw holds a 1.69 ERA over 10 2/3 innings this year and makes for useful depth to keep in the organization.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster following the Corey Dickerson/Adam Cimber trade with the Marlins. Bergen has a 1.69 ERA over 10 2/3 innings with the Blue Jays this year while also missing time with a shoulder injury.

The left-hander has been sidelined with a left shoulder impingement since late May after posting a 1.69 ERA over 10 2/3 innings. Bergen will likely be back in the Toronto bullpen at some point.

Bergen had registered a 1.69 ERA in 10 2/3 innings this season out of the Jays’ bullpen, so this could be a fairly significant loss. There is no timetable yet for the 27-year-old left-hander’s return to action.

Bergen was unexpectedly thrown into a bases-loaded jam created by righty Tyler Chatwood, attempting to preserve a one-run lead with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, and proceeded to hand out three consecutive free passes to take a blown save. He went back-and-forth with Austin Meadows, eventually losing a nine-pitch battle, which brought home the game-tying run. He also issued back-to-back walks to Manuel Margot and Mike Brosseau, putting the Rays ahead for good, before finally recording the final out of the frame. Not good.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right glute strain Wednesday so the Blue Jays needed an extra arm on the roster. This is very likely a short-term stay for the 27-year-old.

Bergen was recalled by the Blue Jays on Friday, but was only on the roster for one game before being shipped back to the team’s alternate site. He’ll get the call when they need additional bullpen help in the near future.
