BYU suffered a scare earlier today as starting running back Harvey Unga went down with a hamstring injury during the Cougars’ return to practice, the Salt Lake Tribune is reporting.
Fortunately for BYU, the injury does not appear to be serious.
According to head coach Bronco Mendenhall, Unga’s status for the next few days is uncertain, but the back “won’t be out” for the opener against Oklahoma State. Unga has already been on the sidelines for most of the contact drills during BYU’s summer camp.
Unga wasn’t the only starter injured as safety Scott Johnson was the recipient of a concussion. Mendenhall chided his senior for the aggressive approach he took to a day the team was in just shells and shoulder pads.
“Scott was actually trying to clock Manase, but he lost the battle,” Mendenhall said. "....With experienced players, their discretion ought to be used at a higher level than that.”
Like Unga, Johnson is expected to return for the opener.
