Kansas head coach David Beaty is paid to win games against Power 5 teams. But on Monday Beaty inked an extension that will pay him extra to... win games against Power 5 teams.
The Jayhawks announced a new contract for Beaty that will keep him in Lawrence through the 2021 season that will pay him $1.6 million in 2017 and raise $100,000 each season thereafter. But beyond that, Beaty will earn $100,000 for each win against a Power 5 opponent and $50,000 for wins against other foes. Which begs the question what the other $1.6 million is for.
Still, even at 2-22 through his first two seasons, Beaty was still extremely underpaid. His original contract paid him $800,000 a year before incentives.
“This shows our appreciation for coach Beaty, his staff and our players,” KU AD Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. “I have enjoyed watching their progress during this season. We want to capitalize on the momentum we all saw as the season came to a close. This reflects our belief in coach Beaty’s leadership, and the energy and enthusiasm that we see every day from him and his players.”
Beaty has one win over a Power 5 opponent thus far, a 24-21 overtime defeat of Texas that effectively shipped Charlie Strong out of Austin. Coincidentally enough, it’s possible that win spurred this extension as USA Today‘s Dan Wolken reported Strong’s successor made overtures about bringing Beaty to Austin as his offensive coordinator.
Not sure if this why he got the extension at KU, but there was at least preliminary interest in Beaty as Herman’s OC at Texas, I’m told.

At $800,000 a year, Tom Herman would’ve been able to offer Beaty a raise to take a demotion at Texas. At $1.6 million, not so much.
