2026 SuperMotocross Round 22, RedBud Motocross Preview: winners, historic results, who to watch

The RedBud MX is traditionally run on the 4th of July weekend in Buchanan, Michigan, but when the Saturday action falls on the actual date, the celebration during Round 22 or the SuperMotocross World Championship, Round 5 of Pro Motocross, will be intense. And with this year marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, everyone wants to be remembered as its victor.

RedBud hosted its first race in 1974 and it didn’t take long for the series to realize it should be on Independence Day weekend. That move happened in 1978.

RedBud is another track on which Jett Lawrence has been perfect on a 450, He went 1-1 here in 2023 and 2025 for the overall wins, but missed 2024 due to injury.

Still, everything has not been rosy for Jett on this track as he failed to score an overall at RedBud on a 250. He was third in 2021 after finishing sixth in the second moto. In 2022, he crashed and finished 35th in the first moto and was scored ninth overall. He won one moto each in those seasons, however.

Julien Beaumer: “I think it’s the best version that we’ve seen. I don’t think it’s the best version of myself, yet.”

Whoever wins this weekend needs to have their setup dialed in when they roll off the hauler. According to WeWentFast.com, the fastest 450 qualifier has won RedBud the past five years. Conversely, only one 250 fast qualifier has won when Jo Shimoda performed the feat in 2022.

Hunter Lawrence has been the king of consistency this year. In the first four rounds, he’s matched his Moto 1 performance in each second race, going 1-1 at Fox Raceway and last week at High Point, 2-2 at Hangtown, and 4-4 at Thunder Valley. (His Thunder Valley race was marked by a one-position penalty, however, for cutting the track.)

Behind the banter and bluster, Haiden Deegan reveals a reflective side after four Pro Motocross rounds.

Haiden Deegan vowed to come out swinging in RedBud, but this was not his best track in the 250 division. Yes, he won in 2023, but he was fifth in his last two outings with results of 14th and second in 2025 and second and sixth in 2024. Even his single overall win came without a moto victory: he was second and third in 2023.

Aaron Plessinger finally got the monkey off his back in High Point. He scored his first top-five in any SMX series in a year. His last strong showing was at High Point in 2025 when he was awarded fourth overall with a 3-4. He finished 6-4 last week.

250 Notes

In four rounds this year, four 250 riders have scored overall wins.

Two of those overall victories came without a moto win: Shimoda won Thunder Valley with results of third and second and Levi Kitchen won Hangtown with a pair of second-place finishes. Seth Hammaker won Pala with a 2-1 and last week, Cole Davies was perfect with a 1-1.

As one might expect, that lack of consistency among most of the riders is contributing to a tight points battle. For much of the second moto at High Point, Shimoda had enough points to leave with the red plate despite failing to win a single moto, but a late surge by Kitchen gave him a one-point advantage.

Julien Beaumer is only one point further back with Cole Davies seven behind the leader. Seth Hammaker entered the round tied with Kitchen for the championship lead, but after crashing hard, he failed to lineup for Moto 2 and is now 16 points off the pace.
