First Sizzler did it, now Oklahoma’s doing it.
Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione told ESPN’s Darren Rovell the school will purchase a food truck now that the NCAA is allowing for unlimited meals and snacks for student-athletes.
From Rovell:“I realize the idea was to give institutions the flexibility to do what they want within their means,” Castiglione said. “But it’s now so flexible that schools can provide full meals to athletes at any time and there will be some schools that will undoubtedly push that envelope. The next thing people will be doing is a comparative analysis for recruiting as to what schools offer more.”
Castiglione said the food truck and perhaps trailers will not be on demand. They will set up in places that ideally can service the most athletes at a given time.
Kudos to Oklahoma officials for thinking outside the box instead of throwing their hands up and saying “well, we don’t have the available facilities for unlimited meals.” Of course, as Castiglione alluded to, if Oklahoma weren’t able to provide its student-athletes with accessible meals/snacks, surely Texas and other schools it recruits against would play that up with high schoolers.
One kitschy suggestion for Oklahoma: Instead of a food truck, how about a food Conestoga wagon?
