A little over a month after officially transferring to San Diego State, and a week after reports surfaced that he wouldn’t participate in spring practice because of “a variety of things”, Dillon Baxter has officially burned another college football bridge.
According to Brent Schrotenboer of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Aztecs have dismissed the talented but troubled running back from the football program. No reason was given for the abrupt and swift dismissal.
“He’s no longer part of the program” is all head coach Rocky Long would say about the player.
While Baxter would’ve been forced to sit out the 2012 season to satisfy NCAA practice rules, he would’ve been permitted to practice with his Aztec teammates beginning in the spring.
The development is the latest significant bump in the road for the former five-star recruit. After signing with USC as the No. 1 RB in the country in 2010, Baxter spent most of his year-and-a-half stint with the Trojans in and out of Lane Kiffin‘s doghouse for a variety of issues, including but not limited to a marijuana incident; paternity issues; falsely accusing several programs of illegally contacting him after NCAA sanctions were handed down on USC; a golf cart ride with an agent that resulted in a suspension; and admitting to both being a knucklehead and not giving his full effort.
Those issues ultimately led Baxter to transfer from USC in October.
Where Baxter is headed next is very much an unknown at this point in time, although a destination that doesn’t include football and does include working on his off-field issues would probably be optimal.
