South Alabama smothers San Diego State, ends Aztecs’ 13-game winning streak

Earlier today, we made note of the nation’s longest winning streaks, with San Diego State surprising some in holding the second-longest at the FBS level behind defending national champion Alabama. Roughly 12 hours later?

Never mind.

In one of the more startling under-the-radar results of Week 5, South Alabama overcame an SDSU lead late in the third quarter to run away with a 42-24 upset of the 19th-ranked Aztecs. In the program’s fifth season at the FBS level, this marks the first-ever win over a ranked team for the Jaguars.

While it comes as a surprise, perhaps it shouldn’t as USA dropped a Mississippi State team in Starkville in the opener that’s currently 2-2. Of course, they also fumbled away a game to Louisiana-Lafayette and escaped with a one-point overtime win over FCS Nicholls State just a week ago.

For the Aztecs, the loss snapped a 13-game winning streak that began the week after a Sept. 26 loss to Penn State last season. Interestingly, that loss to the Nittany Lions was the back-end of a two-game losing streak. The front-end? A 34-27 loss to the Jaguars in overtime.
