2019 Shortstop Rankings

Time for some All-Star break fun: here are my very, very preliminary 2019 player rankings. I’ve done my best to list players where they’ll be eligible next year, and the free agents-to-be are listed without teams. Players with options for next year are still listed with their current teams if those options are likely to be exercised.

Along with the position rankings is a top 300 list for 2019. Click to see other preliminary 2019 rankings.

  • Trea Turner wasn’t going to stay ahead of Manny Machado, Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa forever; he always figured to have a shelf life as an elite basestealer. Still, I thought we’d have a couple of more years of 50ish-steal seasons. Right now, though, he’s at 22 steals in 96 games after coming in at 46 in 98 games last year. He stole 12 bases in April, four in May, six in June and none so far in July (he’s been caught three times this month, matching his total from the first three months combined). I want to see if Turner bounces back there in the second half before entirely writing him off as next year’s No. 1 shortstop, but if he’s a 30-steal guy, rather than a 50-steal guy, going forward, he’s going to fall behind that top tier.

  • Brendan Rodgers is the high prospect on the list, though 28th could still be quite low if he’s able to become the Rockies’ second baseman next year with DJ LeMahieu eligible for free agency. Rodgers has hit .270/.333/.508 with 17 homers in 11 steals at Double-A Hartford while logging time at second and third along with short. My guess is that he opens next year in Triple-A, but if it looks like he’ll get the job, he’d crack the top 20 here, maybe the top 15.

  • The Twins’ disappointing season would seem to make it more likely that Nick Gordon will get the chance to take over at second base next year, though he needs to pick it up in Triple-A; he’s at .242/.250/.353 in 49 games since his promotion to Rochester. He opened the year by hitting an impressive .333/.381/.525 in 42 games at Double-A Chattanooga.
