Xavier Edwards out of lineup on Friday

Xavier Edwards is not in Miami’s starting lineup against the Giants on Friday.

It appears to just be a routine day off for the young infielder, who has struggled to a .192/.286/.192 line through his first 15 games of June. Javier Sanoja is filling in at second base against RHP Landen Roupp.
McClanahan could go on short IL stint
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan left his last start early with back tightness and Eric Samulski thinks a short trip to the IL is in the cards to let him rest for a potential trip to the postseason.

Tigers designated RHP Andre Granillo for assignment.

The 26-year-old hurler was claimed off of waivers from the Nationals just prior to the All-Star break, but the Tigers needed the 40-man roster spot for the arrival of Max Clark on Friday. It’s possible that Granillo will attract interest on waivers once again.

Vierling suffered the injury during Wednesday’s game against the Orioles. The Tigers have yet to provide a timeline for his return, but he’s going to miss at least a couple of weeks at a minimum. Max Clark was promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move on Friday.

Tigers selected the contract of OF Max Clark from Triple-A Toledo.

As expected, Clark joins the Tigers for Friday’s series opener against the Athletics. The 21-year-old outfielder has hit .277/.368/.427 with 10 homers and 21 stolen bases over 89 games at the Triple-A level this season. His dynamic skillset makes him an intriguing mixed league fantasy option right out of the gate.

Brewers designated LHP Thomas Panone for assignment.

The Brewers needed to clear a spot on their active roster for the return of DL Hall on Friday and unfortunately for Pannone he found himself on the outside looking in. The 32-year-old hurler posted a 6.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 2/2 K/BB ratio over three innings in his lone appearance with the Brewers.

Brewers activated LHP DL Hall from the 15-day injured list.

The 27-year-old southpaw will rejoin the Brewers’ bullpen for Friday evening’s contest against the Angels. He had been shelved since June 4 due to a left pectoral strain. Thomas Pannone was designated for assignment in a corresponding move to clear a spot on the Brewers’ active roster.

The Orioles announced that they have agreed to a two-year contract extension with right-hander Yennier Cano.

The deal also includes a club option for the 2029 season. Financial terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. The 32-year-old right-hander has functioned as one of the best setup men in the game for most of the past four seasons and he holds a terrific 2.21 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 31/8 K/BB ratio over 36 2/3 innings in his 48 appearances this season.

Athletics designated RHP Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang for assignment.

The A’s needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the addition of Jonathan Ornelas on Friday and unfortunately it looks like Zhong-Ao Zhuang drew the short straw this time. He has really struggled in 15 appearances (12 starts) at the Triple-a level this season, posting a 7.84 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and a 42/28 K/BB ratio across 59 2/3 innings. He could attract some interest on waivers.

Athletics optioned OF Colby Thomas to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Athletics had plenty of outfield depth on their major league roster and wanted to add an extra infielder instead for their weekend series against the Tigers so Thomas gets the boot. The 25-year-old has hit just .202/.235/.333 with four homers, 11 RBI and a 37/4 K/BB ratio in 121 plate appearances with the A’s this season.

Athletics selected the contract of INF Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 26-year-old infielder joined the Athletics last week on a minor league pact after being released by the Yankees. He has hit an impressive .311/.378/.505 with 11 homers, 46 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 308 plate appearances at the Triple-A level this season. If he works his way into regular playing time with the A’s, he could carve out some value in deeper mixed leagues.

Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Friday that right-hander Tatsuya Imai is being moved to the team’s bullpen.

The 28-year-old hurler has shown flashes of brilliance during his first season stateside, but they have been few and far between. He didn’t make it out of the first inning in his last start, walking four of the first seven hitters that he faced against the Angels. Any lingering mixed league value that he may have had in deeper formats vanishes with the move to the bullpen.
