Luis Urías to join Blue Jays roster following deal

Luis Urías will join the Blue Jays after being acquired from the Diamondbacks in a trade Sunday.

Although Urías’s official transactions page said he’s been assigned to Buffalo, he will be headed to the majors. According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Urías trigged an upward mobility cause in his contract, which led to the D-backs trading him. Davis Schneider has played well since his recall, so perhaps Yohendrick Pinango will lose his spot to Urías. An Ernie Clement IL stint might also be a possibility.

It sounds like a precautionary move and fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. It’ll be rookie Sean Keys moving over to cover first base with Ernie Clement at the hot corner and Luis Urías entering the lineup at second. Guerrero has been through a tough season at the plate with just four home runs across 81 games. There should be an update on his status following Tuesday’s contest in Toronto.

Blue Jays recalled OF Yohendrick Piñango from Triple-A Buffalo.

Piñango remains a defensive liability, but the Blue Jays are probably willing to overlook that if he’s running a 45 percent hard-hit rate. The 24-year-old rookie was just shipped back to the minors earlier this week after hitting .283/.331/.433 with four homers and 18 RBI in 138 plate appearances. He gets another look at the highest level with Jesús Sánchez requiring a trip to the injured list with a sprained ankle.

Blue Jays optioned Davis Schneider to Triple-A Buffalo.

As expected, Schneider heads back to the minors with slugging prospect Sean Keys ascending to the big leagues. The 27-year-old has hit just .153/.282/.296 with three homers and one steal in 118 plate appearances over 49 games this season. His multi-position versatility is valuable in a bench role, but he simply hasn’t hit enough for the Blue Jays to justify keeping him around as they attempt to make a playoff push.

Ernie Clement (hip) remains out of the lineup for the second straight game on Wednesday against the Astros.

Clement has been battling left hip soreness. The versatile 30-year-old figures to be available off the bench in this contest and is presumably day-to-day heading into a four-game series against the Rangers. It’ll be Luis Urías drawing into Toronto’s lineup for the second consecutive game in his absence.

Luis Urías, acquired from the Diamondbacks on Sunday, went 2-for-5 with a homer against the Astros in his Blue Jays and 2026 MLB debut Tuesday.

Urías’s homer was a 363-footer down the left field line. He started at second base today with Ernie Clement absent. It’s unclear if he’ll stick on the Blue Jays roster as Lenyn Sosa and Addison Barger make their way back in the coming weeks, but that just means he’s auditioning for everyone right now. The homer was his 61st in 583 games since he debuted with the Padres in 2018.

Blue Jays optioned OF Yohendrick Piñango to Triple-A Buffalo

Piñango is having a solid season overall, hitting .283/.331/.433 with four home runs in 136 plate appearances, but he had slowed down of late and made just two starts this past week. The Blue Jays valued David Schneider’s defensive versatility and his ability to handle left-handed pitching, so Piñango was sent down with Luis Urias joining the team.

Urías was acquired from the Diamondbacks on Saturday and will now officially join the Blue Jays roster. Urías was hitting .361/.393/.546 with three homers in 27 games for Triple-A Reno and should fill a utility role off the bench for the Blue Jays.

He was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo. Urías was hitting .361/.393/.546 with three homers in 27 games for Triple-A Reno. The eight-year major league veteran hit .230/.315/.338 in 330 plate appearances for the A’s last season and provides extra infield depth with Addison Burger and Lenyn Sosa down.

Ernie Clement is not in Toronto’s starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Cubs.

He’ll sit against RHP Ben Brown in what appears to just be a routine day off. Clement had started all 15 games the Jays have played in June and is hitting a robust .294/.313/.443 on the season. Davis Schneider will start at second base in Clement’s absence.

Andrés Giménez was scratched from the Blue Jays’ starting lineup on Sunday due to left wrist soreness.

Giménez suffered the injury while sliding back into first base during Saturday’s battle against the Yankees. He’s considered day-to-day. Davis Schneider will start in his place at second base against Will Warren and the Yankees on Sunday afternoon.
