Marlins activate Griffin Conine for Sunday return

The 21-year-old phenom gave the Tigers an early lead as he clobbered a 414-foot (103.0-mph EV) opposite-field two-run shot off of Aaron Nola in the third inning. That would be the only time that he would reach base in five trips to the plate. The first-time All-Star and Rookie of the Year favorite is slashing a scintillating .286/.395/.426 with eight homers, 34 RBI and 11 stolen bases through his first 405 plate appearances in the big leagues.

Torkelson put the cherry on top of the victory with a 389-foot (105.2-mph EV) two-run shot off of Max Lazar in the seventh inning that increased the Tigers’ lead to 10-2. That was his lone knock in four trips to the plate in the ballgame. On the season, the 26-year-old slugger is hitting just .213/.311/.412 with 16 homers and 43 RBI. The Tigers will need his bat to continue to heat up if they’re going to make a serious push towards the postseason.

Keith ambushed a first-pitch fastball from Max Lazar in the seventh inning for a 415-foot (101.1-mph EV) solo shot that increased the Tigers’ advantage to 8-2. That would be his only hit in five at-bats on the evening. For the season, the 24-year-old infielder is slashing an underwhelming .249/.296/.398 with the aforementioned eight long balls and 22 RBI.

Flaherty racked up six strikeouts on the evening while issuing three free passes. He served up a solo homer to Derek Hill in the third inning and allowed a two-out RBI single to Hill in the fourth, and that was the extent of the damage done against him. He generated 16 whiffs on 86 offerings on the night, posting a quality CSW of 33 percent. The 30-year-old hurler concludes a tumultuous first half with a 3-8 record, 4.48 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and a 98/40 K/BB ratio over 82 1/3 innings in his 18 starts. He should feel good heading into the second half though, having allowed just two runs in total over his last three starts.

Hill became a late addition to the Phillies’ lineup after Justin Crawford was scratched with a knee issue. The 30-year-old outfielder returned to the first ballpark that he called home in the big leagues and made an instant impact, crushing a 427-foot (104.1-mph EV) solo shot off of Jack Flaherty to open the scoring in the third inning. He then tied things up at two runs apiece with an RBI single in the fourth inning. On the season, Hill is now slashing .266/.321/.460 with seven homers and 15 RBI in 137 plate appearances on the season.

Nola piled up eight strikeouts in the contest while issuing a pair of walks. All of the damage done against him came on one mighty swing of the bat by Kevin McGonigle in the third inning. Aside from that, Nola was in complete command. He got 14 swings and misses on 84 pitches on the night — six of those on his knuckle curve — registering a CSW of 31 percent. The 33-year-old righty heads into the All-Star break with a 3-6 5.75 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and a 102/31 K/BB ratio over 97 innings through his first 19 starts. Aside from the strikeouts, he has been an unmitigated disaster for fantasy purposes.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. Expect Friday’s probable starters — Braxton Ashcraft and Brandon Sproat — to pitch in one of Saturday’s contests.

It’s the first trip to the Mid-Summer Classic for the 26-year-old backstop. Herrera has had a solid first half at the plate, slashing .249/.384/.395 with 11 long balls, 40 RBI and a 68/51 K/BB ratio over 411 plate appearances.

He still didn’t give any sort of timeline on how long Ohtani will be held off of the mound for, but he did note that if this were September that Ohtani would still be pitching. Take that for what it’s worth. It sounds like he’ll avoid a trip to the injured list altogether, though it seems likely that he’ll miss at least a couple of trips through the Dodgers’ rotation.

The 25-year-old right-hander was away from the team for the first half of the week. He returns to a terrific 3.33 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 46/21 K/BB ratio over 46 innings in 43 appearances out of the Jays’ bullpen. He has also tallied three victories and a save on the year.
