Liam Hicks (back) underwent an MRI that didn’t reveal any structural damage.

Hicks was sent for precautionary imaging that came back clean after hitting the injured list with a back strain over the weekend. The 27-year-old slugging backstop is likely to miss at least a couple weeks, but doesn’t appear to be facing an extended absence.

Just two days off the injured list, Hicks has notched two hits in each game since he’s returned. It must be nice to return from a 10-day layoff in Coors Field and immediately get your confidence back. He’s slotted right back into the top third of the Marlins’ lineup and remains a high batting average run producer.

It’s phenomenal timing for fantasy purposes as Hicks returns to Miami’s lineup for Tuesday’s showdown against the Rockies at high-octane Coors Field. The 27-year-old has been one of the most impactful backstops in fantasy this season, hitting .278/.359/.472 with a career-high 13 home runs, 53 RBI and one steal in 288 plate appearances through 73 games before requiring a trip to the injured list with a lower back strain on June 20. His return should add some additional thunder to the heart of the Marlins order.

Tuesday is the first day that Hicks can be activated from the injured list for his lower back inflammation. On Saturday, the Marlins said he was participating in full baseball activities and had no issues with swinging. There have been no updates since then, but if Hicks didn’t suffer any setbacks, then he should be able to return to join the team in Colorado.

Miami made the decision to give Hicks some additional time off after he showed up to the ballpark on Sunday still experiencing back tightness. The 27-year-old has emerged as one of the most impactful catchers in fantasy this season, slashing .278/.359/.472 with a career-high 13 home runs, 53 RBI and one steal in 288 plate appearances through 73 games. Back issues can be complicated matters, but Hicks figures to return at some point in early July.

Hicks scored on a Kyle Stowers single in the second inning, came around on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, and took an Antwone Kelly changeup off the right field foul pole in the eight inning for a two-run shot. After a .224/.325/.367 May raised concerns that April was a fluke, Hicks has raised his overall line from .268/.344/.468 on May 31 to .274/.355/.489 as we stand today.

Hernández gets a look atop Miami’s lineup after homering during Monday’s series opener. The 26-year-old has homered twice in his last seven games and has three round-trippers and five steals through 36 games this season. It’ll be interesting to see if the Marlins continue to give him opportunities near the top of the order. Liam Hicks, who has typically hit first or second recently, is batting sixth with Washington utilizing lefty opener Richard Lovelady ahead of veteran righty Miles Mikolas on Tuesday night.

Hicks extended Miami’s lead with a solo shot to right field off Nats reliever Cole Henry in the ninth inning. It was his 12th round-tripper of the season. The 26-year-old backstop reached base safely in two of his five plate appearances out of the leadoff spot and scored a pair of runs in this one. He’s had an outstanding season so far, slashing .268/.345/.479 with 29 runs scored, 12 homers, 46 RBI and one steal in 58 games.

Miami has moved Hicks around between several spots in their lineup, but he’s mostly hit second for the last month. The 26-year-old slugging backstop figures to continue hitting near the top of the order, which should drive enough volume to make him one of the more impactful catchers in the fantasy landscape. He’s off to a phenomenal start, slashing .268/.344/.468 with 27 runs scored, 11 homers, 45 RBI and one steal through 57 games this season.

Brayan Rocchio played the role of hero for the Guardians on Thursday night, blasting a two-run walk-off homer off of Grant Taylor to propel his squad to an unlikely 6-5 victory over the White Sox.

The Guardians held an early 2-0 lead in the contest, but trailed 5-2 heading to the home half of the sixth. They scratched out a run there and David Fry swatted a solo homer in the seventh to make it a 5-4 ballgame. It remained that way until the ninth where Rhys Hoskins worked a leadoff walk and Rocchio ambushed a first-pitch fastball from Taylor for his 380-foot (98.4-mph EV) game-winning blast. Rocchio also plated a run with a bases-loaded walk in the third, finishing the night 1-for-4 with three RBI. On the season, he’s now hitting .269/.342/.392 with six homers and 37 RBI.

Travis Bazzana had a terrific day at the dish in Thursday’s victory over the White Sox, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, run scored and a pair of walks.

Bazzana led off the home half of the first with a single but wound up stranded at third. He then opened the scoring with an RBI double in the third inning and scored as Brayan Rocchio worked a bases-loaded walk. Bazzana also walked in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Guardians couldn’t cash him in. The 23-year-old phenom is slashing a solid .251/.346/.420 with seven homers, 26 RBI and 12 stolen bases over 240 plate appearances across his first 56 MLB contests.

Slade Cecconi struggled in a no-decision against the White Sox on Thursday evening, surrendering five runs on nine hits across five-plus innings of work.

Cecconi struck out three batters on the night while issuing one base on balls. He cruised through the first four innings unscathed, but the White Sox got him for three runs in the fifth, including a two-run double by Kyle Teel. Things got worse when he returned for the sixth, as he served up a two-run blast to Chase Meidroth before exiting. Cecconi got six whiffs on 100 offerings on the night, posting a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll carry a 4.44 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 73/30 K/BB ratio (95 1/3 innings) into his final start of the first half on Wednesday against the Twins in Minneapolis.

Chase Meidroth went 1-for-4 and swatted a two-run homer on Thursday evening, but it wasn’t enough to power the White Sox to victory over the Guardians in Cleveland.

Meidroth victimized Guardians’ right-hander Slade Cecconi for a 349-foot (100.6-mph EV) two-run shot in the sixth inning that extended the White Sox’ lead to 5-2. That would be the extent of their offense though. The 24-year-old infielder is now slashing .272/.343/.387 on the season to go along with seven long balls, 29 RBI and two stolen bases (in four attempts) over 355 plate appearances for the White Sox.

Grant Taylor suffered a blown save on Thursday night against the Guardians, giving up a walk-off two-run homer Brayan Rocchio.

Taylor was called upon in the eighth inning with the White Sox clinging to a one-run advantage. He issued a one-out walk to Steven Kwan but escaped any damage and recorded a pair of strikeouts. He was then sent back out for the ninth when trouble ensued. He issued a leadoff walk to Rhys Hoskins, then after retiring Kahlil Watson on a fly ball, served up Rocchio’s game-winning blast. It’s Taylor’s first loss on the season. Hopefully it won’t cost him save chances going forward, as he still seems to be the most capable option at the back of the White Sox’ bullpen.

Davis Martin struggled mightily during a no-decision against the Guardians on Thursday evening, allowing two runs on six hits over 3 1/3 innings of work.

Martin just could not command the baseball in this one, issuing five free passes in his abbreviated outing. It’s also the first time in 61 career starts that he failed to record a single strikeout. All of the damage done against him came in the third inning as Travis Bazzana smacked an RBI double and Brayan Rocchio worked a bases-loaded walk. Martin threw just 37 of his 73 pitches for strikes, generating just three whiffs and posting a miserable CSW of just 14 percent. He’ll look to bounce back and finish the first half strong as he carries a 9-3 record, 3.08 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 90/29 K/BB ratio (96 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Red Sox.

Dustin May was pulled from Thursday’s start against the Braves in the first inning due to a right ankle contusion.

May was drilled in the ankle by a batted ball off the bat of Dominic Smith in the opening inning, then remained in the game to face three additional hitters, so it was unclear initially if he was pulled due to injury or ineffectiveness. Either way, he was saddled with five runs on five hits and a pair of walks in just 2/3 of an inning. It sounds like he was able to avoid serious injury though, so he may be able to take his final turn in the Cardinals’ rotation before the All-Star break.

Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts told reporters on Thursday that right-hander Edwin Díaz (elbow) threw 28 pitches during a successful bullpen session.

Roberts also noted that the Dodgers’ closer looked “really good” during the session. He remains on track to rejoin the club’s bullpen after the All-Star break, which would shift Tanner Scott back into a setup role.

Dodgers sent RHP Jonathan Hernandez outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Hernandez was designated for assignment on Tuesday and passed through waivers unclaimed. It’s unclear if he’ll elect free agency or remain with the Dodgers as excess bullpen depth at the Tripel-A level. The 29-year-old posted a miserable 8.15 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and a 15/12 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings in 12 appearances with the Dodgers.

Astros optioned RHP Miguel Ullola to Triple-A Sugar Land.

Ullola made his MLB debut against the Twins on Monday, racking up four strikeouts over two scoreless innings. He then followed that up with three strikeouts over two perfect frames in the series finale on Wednesday. The only logical reason for the demotion would be to keep him stretched out as a starter at the Triple-A level until he’s needed in the same role with the Astros.
