Royce Lewis delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning on Friday night, propelling the Twins to an improbable 9-8 victory over the Rockies.

The Twins led 7-0 heading to the eighth in this one, but the Rockies stormed back to take an 8-7 lead in the ninth. They evened it up with an RBI single by Byron Buxton in the ninth, then Lewis played the role of hero with his walk-off knock off of Jimmy Herget in the 10th. Lewis finished the evening 3-for-5 and is now hitting .217/.294/.377 with seven homers, 22 RBI and five stolen bases on the season.

Lewis has homered seven times this year, and three of them have come since he was recalled by the Twins a little under two weeks ago. The former first-overall pick had a rough go of it in the series against the Rangers, but for the most part, he’s looked good since getting a second chance at the highest level. At the very least, Lewis is worth monitoring.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis had a two-run single in Tuesday’s rout, but that was his only hit to go along with seven strikeouts in 13 at-bats in the series in Texas. As the rest of the Twins thrived in the three-game sweep, his OPS dropped 41 points from .680 to .639.

It’s notable that Lewis is back at the hot corner for the first time since returning to the big leagues earlier this month, especially with top prospect Kaelen Culpepper seemingly on the verge of arriving as the club’s shortstop of the future. The 27-year-old infielder has torn the cover off the ball, hitting .379 (11-for-29) with three homers, five RBI and one steal across eight games during that span. There’s some appeal here for fantasy managers, especially those trying to replace superstar José Ramírez.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
It was a good day for Lewis, but the last at-bat was a bust; up with two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth, he swung at the first pitch he saw, a JoJo Romero changeup that was just off the plate, and produced a routine double play to half the Twins’ rally. Still, Lewis has now hit in six straight. He’s 10-for-26 with three homers and two doubles since returning to the majors.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis has reached base in every game since his recall and raised his seasonal line from .163/.261/.279 to .189/.281/.320 in just five games. A pre-emptive pickup probably wouldn’t be the worst use of a roster spot if you’re desperate at third base. He’s also played games at first and second base since being recalled, so he looks like he’ll eventually get some positional flexibility for fantasy purposes.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis was on a tear at Triple-A before being recalled over the weekend, and he now has his first long ball back in the bigs. He has started all four contests since returning, including one at second base and three at first base. It could lead to some favorable multi-position eligibility, but what matters most for fantasy is whether he hits.
  • MIN Right Fielder #16
Martin, who is hitting .193 (21-for-109) with one homer and four steals over his last 30 games, has been moved to the top of the order to face Tigers lefty Framber Valdez with Byron Buxton hitting second. The other notable lineup development for Minnesota involves Royce Lewis making his third consecutive start at first base.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis made his first career appearance at the position late during Saturday’s game and now will draw his first start there on Sunday. The 27-year-old slugger was lighting the world on fire at the Triple-A level once again before going 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout during his return to the Twins on Saturday.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis made his second career start at second base and, after some shuffling, his first major league appearance at first today. The error came on what should have been a routine double play turn, but Lewis, still a novice at second, didn’t realize how much time he had with his back to the runner and made a bad throw. Of course, that still wouldn’t have been an error, since the double play can’t be assumed, but the ball went into the dugout and allowed the batter to advance to second. On offense, Lewis had a weak groundout, a walk and a weak popout before coming up with two on and two outs while down by one run in the bottom of the ninth and striking out looking against Alex Lange. It’s all a good reminder that there might not ever have been a bigger skill gap between Triple-A and the majors than there is right now. Still, Lewis will surely get another chance Sunday.
  • MIN 3rd Baseman #23
Lewis returns to the big leagues after nearly a month at Triple-A, where he tore the cover off the ball, hitting .333 (20-for-60) with 10 homers across 15 games. The gap between Triple-A and the big leagues feels wider than it has in recent memory, which makes projecting immediate success for Lewis a challenge as he returns to the majors. He’s clearly regained some confidence at the plate, which is an important variable. He’s expected to see time at third base, second base, first base and DH moving forward. At a minimum, Lewis is worthy of a speculative add in deeper mixed leagues on the chance he can translate his strong Triple-A run into sustained success at the highest level.

Phillies designated RHP Jean Cabrera for assignment.

The Phillies needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to bring back Bryan De La Cruz on Sunday and unfortunately for Cabrera he drew the short straw this time. The 24-year-old right-hander has been abysmal in the minor leagues this season, posting a 9.10 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a 46/32 K/BB ratio over 62 1/3 innings in 15 starts between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. It seems likely he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and remain with the Phillies.

Phillies re-signed OF Bryan De La Cruz to a one-year contract; optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

De La Cruz exercised the opt-out clause in his minor league deal with the Phillies, so the club did what they had to do in order to bring him back and keep him in the organization as quality outfield depth. The 29-year-old has hit .254/.343/.426 with 12 homers and 51 RBI in 328 plate appearances at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season.

Alejandro Osuna is absent from the Rangers’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Tigers.

Osuna had started every game this week in left field, so he’ll get a breather for Sunday’s tilt against the Tigers. Josh Smith will start in his place and will bat seventh for the Rangers against right-hander Casey Mize.

Salvador Perez (elbow) returned to the Royals’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Phillies.

The 36-year-old slugger missed each of the team’s previous three games due to soreness in his right elbow. He’s back in there as the designated hitter on Sunday though, batting sixth against Phillies’ right-hander Aaron Nola. Perez owns a disappointing .201/.241/.327 slash line on the season with 10 long balls and 30 RBI in his 340 plate appearances.

Samuel Basallo is absent from the Orioles’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Reds in Cincinnati.

Once again Basallo will take a seat with an opposing left-hander on the mound. Coby Mayo will serve as the team’s designated hitter in his place on Sunday and will bat fifth against Reds’ left-hander Nick Lodolo.

Brayan Rocchio is not in the Guardians’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s tilt against the Yankees.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day off for the Guardians’ shortstop. Daniel Schneemann will start in his place and will bat seventh against White Sox’ southpaw Chris Murphy on Sunday in Cleveland.

Paul Goldschmidt is not in the Yankees’ starting lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Twins.

The Yankees haven’t said that Goldschmidt is dealing with any sort of physical issue, but this is the third time that he has been held out of the lineup in the last four games, so it’s possible that there’s something minor going on there. It’s also possible that they wanted to give him a couple days to clear his head after scuffling a bit at the plate over the last few weeks. Jasson Dominguez will serve as the team’s designated hitter on Sunday with Max Schuemann drawing a start in right field and batting seventh against Twins’ right-hander Joe Ryan.

Francisco Alvarez is not in the Mets’ starting lineup for Sunday’s showdown against the Braves.

Alvarez has started every game this week either behind the plate or as the designated hitter, so he’ll get a well-deserved breather in this one. Luis Torrens will start behind the dish and bat eighth for the Mets against Braves’ southpaw Martin Perez.

Rays recalled RHP Mason Englert from Triple-A Durham.

The 26-year-old right-hander will start in Sunday’s series finale against the Astros in Houston. It’s unclear if the plan is for him to work as a traditional starter or if he’ll just work a couple of innings as an opener in what will turn into a full bullpen game for the Rays. Englert holds a 3.96 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 19/6 K/BB ratio over 25 frames in 12 appearances with the Rays this season.

Rays optioned RHP Trevor Martin to Triple-A Durham.

Martin has pitched decently in six appearances for the Rays this season, registering a 3.97 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and a 7/4 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings. He made just one appearance during his most recent stint with the big league club though, working a scoreless inning on June 28. Mason Englert was recalled from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move on Sunday.
