Unlike Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., Bogaerts didn’t homer tonight. He did, however, deliver the hardest-hit ball of the game with his 112-mph single in the eighth. It topped his previous season-high EV by one mph, and it was the third-hardest ball he’s come up with in four years in San Diego. Bogaerts has had a rough season, but his exit velocity numbers are all right around or a little better than his career averages. We don’t feel great about him being signed for seven (seven!) more years after this one, but there’s a decent chance his numbers will bounce back some in 2027.

Mize got the job done, but it certainly wasn’t in any sort of encouraging fashion. His fastball velocity was down one mph from his season average, and he got a visit from the trainer at one point. He finished the game having allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out none. He recorded two missed swings and finished with a 12 percent CSW. If he hadn’t been facing the Rockies, this probably wouldn’t have gone nearly as well.

The Padres went right back to their late-game trio of Bradgley Rodriguez, Adrian Morejon and Miller tonight after avoiding all three on Sunday. They might be down again on Tuesday, now that they’ve all worked three times in four days. Yuki Matsui will be available to close, though.

It’s unclear if the Rockies could have gotten anything significant in moving Sugano at the deadline, but he certainly hasn’t helped them since. He was 11-4 with a 4.47 ERA through the end of July, and he’s 1-6 with an 8.10 ERA in eight starts since. He’s due to face the Mariners on Sunday.

McCarthy joins Corbin Carroll in the 30/10 club this year. He’s the first Rockie with 10 triples since Charlie Blackmon had 14 in his career year in 2017. Before that, both Dexter Fowler and Tyler Colvin got there in 2012.

It seemed like it might be a recurrence of his nerve problems with his hand. Fairbanks walked the only batter he faced before departing with a 7-6 lead in the ninth. Jack Ralston replaced him and ended up taking a blown save and a loss. If Fairbanks returns to the IL, Calvin Faucher will be the favorite for saves in the Marlins pen the rest of the way.

Bernal had three hits for the second time in his last four games. He’s only appeared in 13 games and has just 52 at-bats, but he’s hitting .327 with three home runs, 14 RBI and a .933 OPS. Bernal is worth adding in two-catcher formats as his hot start to his MLB career continues.

O’Brien entered with a one-run lead and got himself into a two-on, one-out jam. He got the next two batters out and picked up the save. O’Brien had blown his last two save opportunities with his last save coming on September 4 against the Rockies, 10 days ago. He had 24 saves in the first half of the season and made the All-Star team for the first time in his career. Since then, he has a 5.40 ERA and 13 saves in the second half.

Roupp gave up five hits, walked three and struck out four. He fell to 9-14 with the loss. Roupp wasn’t as sharp as his three previous starts where he had a combined 1.13 ERA. He has a 4.01 ERA on the season. Roupp is lined up to face the Dodgers on the road on Sunday.

Mathews gave up four hits, walked two and struck out eight. He’s now posted back-to-back quality starts for the first time in his young career. Mathews has a 3.62 ERA in the first seven starts of his career. He’s lined up to face the Nationals at home on Sunday.
