Willson Contreras has suspension cut to five games

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports Willson Contreras’ suspension has been reduced from seven games to five games on appeal.

The five-game suspension begins on Thursday and will see Contreras back for the second game after the All-Star break, where Boston is taking on the Rays. Contreras fouled a pitch off his foot and was likely to sit today either way, so it makes sense to start the clock now. He’ll miss three games against Mets pitching over the weekend, reappear for the Home Run Derby, then return in the second half of a doubleheader against Tampa Bay on Friday.
White Sox aren't 'going away' in second half
With an impressive first half of the season wrapped up, the White Sox picked up where they left off by taking the series in Toronto as they aim to cement their place atop the AL Central.

Contreras’ home run was his 22nd of the season. He hit a two-run shot off Shane McClanahan in the fifth inning. Contreras has six home runs in his last 14 games. He’s hitting .283 with a .931 OPS and 64 RBI.

The Red Sox extended their winning streak to 11 consecutive games by sweeping Friday’s doubleheader against the division-leading Rays at Fenway Park. Contreras took Tampa Bay reliever Mason Englert deep in the opening frame of the nightcap affair, his first contest back following a five-game suspension for his on-field actions against the Nationals earlier this month. The 34-year-old has served as Boston’s primary offensive catalyst with 21 round-trippers through 89 games. He’s on pace to easily eclipse the 30-homer threshold for the first time in his career becoming the latest example of a veteran right-handed power hitting finding success immediately upon arrival at Fenway Park, much like J.D. Martinez did last decade.

This will be the fifth and final game that Willson Contreras is suspended for. When Contreras returns, Gonzalez will likely play more DH at second base, but he should remain in the lineup. He’s hitting .231/.302/.385 in 11 games since returning from offseason shoulder surgery.

Contreras added while speaking prior to the showcase in Philadelphia that he wants to finish his career in Boston. The 34-year-old first baseman put together an impressive 13-homer opening round during the Home Run Derby earlier this week and has been one of the main reasons that the Red Sox are within striking distance of a playoff spot coming out of the Midsummer Classic.

Contreras left Wednesday night’s game after fouling a pitch off of his foot. He didn’t believe he was dealing with anything other than a bruise, but he was also noticeably limping when he left the game. The Red Sox will give him at least one day off and go from there. Brett Harris, just up from Triple-A, will bat eighth and play first base, and Romy Gonzalez will hit cleanup and be the DH. Nate Eaton is also batting seventh and in left field after coming off the suspension list.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman
Harris will start at first base against the White Sox on Thursday after Willson Contreras fouled a ball off of his foot on Wednesday and had to leave the game. There is no word yet on whether or not Contreras will need to go on the injured list, but, for one day at least, Harris will take his place at first base.

Contreras expressed optimism that he doesn’t believe he’s dealing with anything more than a bruise after fouling a ball off his left foot during Wednesday’s contest against the White Sox. It doesn’t sound like he’ll undergo any imaging at this time. He’ll continue playing until the appeal process is complete regarding his seven-game suspension stemming from last week’s on-field incident against the Nationals.

There’s a lot to unpack here. Contreras limped off the field following a third-inning fly out where he appeared to roll his ankle while rounding first base and was replaced by Romy Gonzalez at first base after going 0-for-2. He also fouled a ball off his foot earlier in the contest. It’s possible his exit was for precautionary reasons to avoid making matters worse. The 34-year-old accepted an invite to compete in next week’s All-Star Home Run Derby earlier in the day. He’s also waiting on the appeal process to play out regarding a seven-game suspension. He’ll undergo further evaluation and testing to determine the severity of the injury. There should be an update on his status prior to Thursday’s series finale in Chicago.

Contreras gets his wish after expressing a desire to compete in the derby earlier this week. The power-hitting 34-year-old was added to the American League’s roster for the Midsummer Classic earlier this week. He’s been a polarizing figure, to put it mildly, during his Red Sox debut this season. He’s technically still waiting for the appeal process to play out regarding a seven-game suspension for his actions against the Nationals last week. However, his on-field production has been undeniable as he’s on pace for a career-best campaign at the dish, launching 20 round-trippers through 87 first-half games. He’ll be an underdog in the competition, but he’ll be highly motivated to represent Venezuela in the primetime showcase.

Contreras was a surprise snub from the initial rosters that were released Saturday, but the 34-year-old is unsurprisingly going to be a part of the festivities. Even if Contreras was to start serving his suspension — he’s appealing a seven-game ban currently — he should be available to play in Philadelphia.

Cole Young went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the Mariners’ 6-3 win over the Giants on Sunday.

With Dominic Canzone resting, the 22-year-old Young hit third for the first time this season today, even though the Mariners were facing a lefty and Young had hit just .217/.267/.330 against southpaws. It worked out just fine, obviously. Young reached on an error, struck out and singled against Robbie Ray and then homered off righty Adrian Houser in the seventh. He also hit a big homer in Saturday’s win, and he now has 13 on the year.

Logan Gilbert fanned 10 while allowing three runs over six innings Sunday in a win over the Giants.

Gilbert gave up three hits, including a homer, in a two-run first and then just one more over his remaining five innings. The 10 strikeouts matched his season high established last month against the Orioles. He’s 6-2 with a 2.42 ERA in his last 10 starts, and he’s up to 10th in the majors with 129 strikeouts on the season. He’ll pitch in Texas next weekend.

Andrés Muñoz struck out two in a perfect ninth for a save Sunday against the Giants.

It’s Muñoz’s fourth straight hitless appearance. He hasn’t allowed a run in any of his last 12 outings, and he’s now up to 17 saves on the year.

Robbie Ray allowed three runs — one earned — in four-plus innings Sunday against the Mariners.

Ray struck out six. He gave up two unearned runs in a fourth inning that started with a Casey Schmitt error, and he allowed back-to-back singles to start the fifth before being pulled, which eventually led to the one earned run. It’s the first time since May 31 that Ray failed to complete five innings. He remained 8-6 with a 3.33 ERA, and he has a favorable matchup next weekend at home against the Angels.

Rafael Devers went 0-for-4 and struck out three times against the Mariners on Sunday.

Devers lucked into a 339-foot homer on Saturday, but that was the only time he reached base in 14 at-bats against the Mariners, and he struck out three times in all three games of the series. It’s just the seventh time this year that a player has fanned three times in three straight games.

Foster Griffin held the A’s to just a run over his seven innings to get a win for the Nationals on Sunday.

Griffin was a bit fortunate to allow just the one run, as he gave up eight hits and a walk in the contest, and he didn’t miss a ton of bats as seen in just two strikeouts. Still, it’s another effective outing for the 30-year-old in his breakout campaign, and it improves his record to a deserved 11-2. Griffin is currently the subject of trade rumors — it’s worth noting that he’s signed to just a one-year contract right now — but for now, he’s set to face the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Jacob Lopez was charged for a loss while working 4 1/3 innings of two-run baseball against the Nationals on Sunday.

Lopez wasn’t terrible, but not good enough to qualify for a win. The left-hander gave up a run on a fielder’s choice in the third, and a double from Harry Ford in the fourth. He was able to strike out six against two walks in what was one of his better starts of the year, which is more insult than compliment. Lopez still has a 6.64 ERA on the season and will try and build on effort over the weekend against the Twins.

CJ Abrams doubled and homered while help the Nationals to a 5-2 win over the Athletics on Sunday.

Abrams also drew a walk. The 25-year-old budding star has homered 21 times in 2026, and the double was his 19th. He’s also driven in 70 RBI over the Nationals’ first 100 games, and there’s a real shot he’ll reach triple digits for the first time in his young career. There’s been some suggestion the Nationals could move Abrams in a blockbuster package, but it seems more likely he’ll continue to contribute in all five categories as a member of the Nats for the foreseeable future.

Dylan Crews hit a solo homer in a win for the Nationals on Sunday over the Athletics.

Crews also drew a walk and scored a second run. The homer is the seventh for the former second-overall pick, and it improves his slash to .210/.279/.355 over 50 games and 186 at-bats. Crews can’t be trusted in redraft leagues, but there have been just enough good moments to suggest he can be a fantasy regular in the coming campaigns.
