Cardinals LHP prospect Liam Doyle struck out a pair and issued two walks on Sunday in the All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

Doyle’s 24-pitch outing perfectly encapsulated where he’s at in his development as he looked dominant early on, fanning Franklin Arias on an 87.8-mph splitter before getting Ralphy Velazquez to swing through a 98-mph heater at the top of the zone. His fastball command wavered immediately afterwards as he issued two-out free passes to Walker Jenkins and Blake Mitchell before getting out of the frame when Jenkins was thrown out attempting to steal third base. The 22-year-old southpaw, who was selected fifth overall in last year’s MLB Draft, has big-time strikeout stuff thanks to a deceptive delivery and should make an impact for fantasy managers if his command continues to improve.

Liam Doyle, the fifth overall pick in the 2025 draft, is being moved up to Double-A Springfield for the end of the season.

Doyle just made his pro debut Saturday, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings for Low-A Palm Beach. He had a 3.20 ERA and a 164/32 K/BB in 95 2/3 innings for the University of Tennessee this year.

Cardinals signed first-round pick LHP Liam Doyle.

No word yet on the financial terms. Doyle is one of the more intriguing pitching prospects from the 2025 MLB Draft class after a standout collegiate career in the SEC at Tennessee. The hard-throwing 21-year-old righty, who was selected fifth overall earlier this week by the Cardinals, figures to move extremely quickly through St. Louis’ system given the rapid ascent we’ve seen from fellow elite college arms in recent years. There’s a chance he’s the top pitcher from the draft class and might be the first one to reach the majors. He’s a top-50 range prospect for dynasty purposes.

Cardinals selected Tennessee LHP Liam Doyle with the No. 5 selection of the 2025 MLB Draft.

Doyle was one of the best pitchers in the SEC, and he was able to strike out a sensational 164 hitters over just 95 2/3 innings with a 3.20 ERA in the best baseball conference in the sport. He saw a massive jump in velocity from his sophomore season, and he now touches 100 mph and sits consistently in the mid-to-high 90s. He will throw a cutter that bears into the hands of right-handed hitters and a more traditional slider; with both pitches getting above-average grades. He also has a plus splitter, but the ability to command that pitch is still a work in progress. Doyle offers some risk in his left arm, but he has a chance to be the best pitcher in this class because his bat-missing potential is second to none.

Brandon Young didn’t make it out of the fifth while allowing six hits and a three-run homer to Zach Neto against the Angels on Thursday.

Young has a 3.21 ERA over his last 15 starts, but this makes back-to-back duds against the Phillies and Angels. It was a bit unfortunate for him that the sequence worked out to give Neto a three-run homer, but he’s more of a living-on-the-edge 12-team starter than a true must-roster player. A matchup against the Twins next week remains tasty despite the recent downturn.

Sal Stewart went 2-for-4 with a solo home run as the Reds beat the Athletics 6-5 on Thursday.

Stewart wallopped one of four solo bombs against the Athletics on the day, taking Mason Barnett 416 feet to left-center for his 25th homer of the season. Stewart is starting to heat up again, hitting .302/.371/.585 with five homers and a stolen base over his last 15 games after a mid-season swoon. He was a major steal in drafts this past offseason and figures to be in the top-five round discussion in 2027.

Mason Barnett struck out seven but allowed three homers and five earned runs against the Reds on Thursday.

He pitched into the fifth inning for the second time as a major leaguer, but left with the bases loaded and the Reds wound up cashing in two inherited runs by walking twice with the bases loaded against Elvis Alvarado. Barnett’s got decent enough stuff to succeed in this role -- he had a 31 percent Whiff rate and only allowed four hard-hit balls -- but if all the hard-hit balls go over the fence, it’s not ideal. He’ll try to bounce back against the Rays next week.

Andrew Abbott pitched into the seventh inning against the Athletics, allowing three earned runs while striking out four in a win.

It’s another textbook Abbott start, he allowed nine hard-hit balls and only had a 22 percent whiff rate, but he was able to pound the zone and induce enough weak contact to get through the A’s lineup without allowing a single extra-base hit. He’ll remain a fine 15-league starter against the White Sox next week.

DFA’ed by the Padres a few weeks ago, Marinaccio spent a little over a week with the Pirates before being DFA’ed again after the Pirates acquired a whole new bullpen at the deadline. He brings a 4.99 ERA to the back of the Reds pen — the main culprit this year is 10 homers allowed in just 52 1/3 innings pitched.
