ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reports the Diamondbacks are acquiring Lars Nootbaar from the Cardinals.

It’s a bad sign for rookie Ryan Waldschmidt as Arizona appears poised to land Nootbaar in a buzzer-beater. The 28-year-old drew significant interest across the league with the Diamondbacks finding a way to get the deal across the finish line. He represents an immediate upgrade for Arizona against right-handed starters.
Warm takes: Replay audio, Hurts, Kroenke's Angels
Paul Pabst and Andrew Perloff react to the Big Ten adding audio to official replays before discussing if Jalen Hurts is actually a good player, explaining why Stan Kroenke buying the Angels is good for fans and more.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Tanner Houck (elbow) threw a simulated game at the team’s complex in Florida.

Tracy said that it was roughly 15-18 pitches, and Houck averaged around 92 mph on his fastball while touching 94 mph. We could see Houck begin a rehab assignment within the week, which could make him an option for the bullpen later this month.

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Justin Slaten “still feels occasional elbow soreness.”

The Red Sox are adapting Slaten’s throwing program to take those symptoms into account. Perhaps that means having Slaten abandon a pitch that is causing him particular trouble, but it’s never a great sign for a pitcher to be trying to adapt what they’re doing to compensate for lingering soreness. We’re less confident that the Red Sox can get key innings from Slaten down the stretch.

Lazaro Montes is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Despite going 2-for-4 with a walk and a home run on Tuesday, Montes will sit against a left-handed pitcher. It’s not a surprise, but is good confirmation that he is going to be in a strong-side platoon role. Taylor Ward will play right field and Dominic Canzone will DH with Cal Raleigh also getting a day off.

Red Sox recalled LHP Raymond Burgos from Triple-A Worcester

Burgos was up over the weekend as the 27th man in a doubleheader and will now come up to provide the Red Sox with depth out of their bullpen. The 27-year-old has a 5.84 ERA in 12 1/3 innings for the Red Sox this weekend.

White Sox optioned RHP Tanner McDougal to Triple-A Charlotte

McDougal has not appeared in an MLB game since August 13th. He has been moved to a bullpen role as he recovers from a forearm injury that sidelined him for almost three months earlier this season. He likely remains a starting pitching option long-term for the White Sox.

White Sox activated RHP Davis Martin (blister) from the 15-day injured list.

Martin landed on the injured list on August 14th with a blister issue. He has an 8.03 ERA in 24 2/3 innings in the second half and cannot be trusted for fantasy purposes.

Adley Rutschman (elbow) is out of the lineup on Wednesday against the Mariners.

We know that Rutschman is dealing with a hyperextended elbow, and Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said he will likely have to battle through that injury all season. Given how much the Red Sox traded away for Rutschman, this is not an ideal situation, but Tracy did reveal that the MRI showed swelling and bruising but no structural issues. Connor Wong will get yet another start behind the dish with Mickey Gasper at first base, but the Red Sox may want to see if Gasper can catch a few games given how well he’s swinging the bat.

Ketel Marte is not in the lineup on Wednesday against the Phillies.

This is apparently a planned day off for Marte, who was just activated from the injured list on Monday with a knee injury. Marte had been the DH for the first two games of the series, so Gabriel Moreno will take that spot today with James McCann catching.

Denzel Clarke is starting in centerfield and batting ninth against the Rangers on Wednesday.

Clarke has now been off the injured list for two games and has started in center field for both of them. We should note that both of them have been against left-handed pitchers, which means Carlos Cortes was always going to be on the bench for both of these games. It remains to be seen what the Athletics do against a righty, but Zack Gelof has been playing left field, and Henry Bolte has been at designated hitter, which likely means Bolte and Cortes are battling for at-bats against right-handed pitchers.

Athletics designated LHP José Suarez for assignment.

Suarez was just activated off the injured list on August 28th, but he allowed six runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings since returning, so the Athletics are moving on. He could return on a minor league deal or find another minor league opportunity elsewhere.
