Astros recall Jake Meyers from Triple-A

Rushing had a setback with the elbow while throwing prior to Saturday’s game. Eliezer Alfonzo was called up to replace hm, but Hunter Feduccia figures to continue to serve as the primary backup to Will Smith.

Alfonzo went 5-for-27 in 12 games with the Dodgers earlier this season. He’ll function as the team’s third catcher behind Will Smith and Hunter Feduccia.

Burger’s first two-homer game since mid-April was a big one, as he took Ian Seymour deep in both the second and fourth innings. He also came around after the walk, making this the first time this year that he’s scored three runs. He’s at .239/.305/.433 with 25 homers and 82 RBI as he tries to help the Rangers win the AL West and works to ensure that the team will want to bring him back for 2027. It’ll probably cost around $6 million to retain him in arbitration.

If Gore was going to stumble his way home again this year, it sure would have been nice if he had been better early on. With his velocity down about one mph, Gore has a 7.50 ERA and a 9/11 K/BB over 12 innings in his last three starts. There’s always the chance he’ll get it back, but as things stand now, he seems like a poor bet for the remainder of the season. He’s schedule to make his next start Saturday against the D-backs.

The Rangers decided to use Jacob Latz in the eighth against the top of the Rays order today, and he protected a 7-6 lead then. The team then added an insurance run before Junis retired Liam Hicks, Chandler Simpson and Jonny DeLuca in the ninth. It’s Junis’s first save since June 21. He has just one blown save alongside his six saves and 17 holds this season.

Seymour allowed one run, on a Jake Burger homer, through three. The fourth, though, started with a single, a second homer from Burger and another single, bringing a quick end to Seymour’s day. It’s his worst outing of the second half, but the home run ball has always been an issue for him, and things are getting worse of late; he’s allowed nine in his last five appearances. He’ll probably face the Astros next weekend, though it could be behind an opener.

Holmes gave up six hits, walked three and struck out two. He fell to 6-7 with the loss. Holmes had been excellent in his first five starts with the Cubs (1.55 ERA). He has a 2.83 ERA on the year. Holmes is lined up to face the Pirates at home next weekend, where he’ll look to bounce back against the team that drafted him in the ninth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.

Phillips gave up five hits, walked one and struck out three. He improved to 5-6 with the win. Phillips has now won his last two starts. He has a 3.51 ERA on the year. Phillips is lined up to face the Dodgers at home next weekend.

Barrosa, 25, was DFA’d by the D-backs after hitting .201/.285/.343 in 159 plate appearances this season. He’s a lifetime .280/.379/.438 hitter with 28 homers and 37 steals in 288 games in Triple-A, but considering that half of those were in Reno, it’s not a very impressive line. He’s out of options, so he’ll join the Astros’ bench. He’s probably no better than their current assortment of outfield options, though.
