Rosenthal: Braves had trade in place for deGrom

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that the Braves and Rangers had a deal in place for Jacob deGrom, but the pitcher invoked his no-trade clause.

We knew that the Braves had inquired about deGrom, but it seems that conversations went way beyond that. As Rosenthal reports, “teams do not approach players about waiving no-trade clauses so close to the deadline unless something is done.” Given how close the Rangers were to moving deGrom this week, it’s possible those conversations could begin again in the offseason. For the Braves’ part, Rosenthal notes that “other than Skubal and deGrom, they did not view [other] pitchers as difference-makers, or even better than what they had.” We’ll see if that view comes back to haunt them this season.

Jacob deGrom was brilliant in a tough-luck no-decision against the Mariners on Thursday afternoon, racking up 12 strikeouts over six shutout innings.

The 38-year-old right-hander allowed just one single in the contest and didn’t walk a batter. He exited after six frames with a comfortable 3-0 lead which completely evaporated the following inning. He got a whopping 20 swings and misses on 92 pitches on the day — 10 of those on his slider — while registering a CSW of 34 percent. He’ll carry a 3.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 186/38 K/BB ratio (149 1/3 innings) into Wednesday’s showdown against the Red Sox.

Jacob deGrom allowed two runs and struck out seven batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Rays on Saturday.

deGrom surrendered a solo homer to Junior Caminero in the first inning. After three scoreless innings, Richie Palacios later took him deep for a solo homer in the fifth. The two solo homers would be all deGrom would allow over six innings for a quality start. He struck out seven while getting stuck with a no-decision. The 38-year-old right-hander will take a 3.96 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 174/38 K/BB ratio across 143 1/3 innings into a start against the Diamondbacks in Arizona on Friday.

Jacob deGrom tossed seven scoreless innings and got the win in the Rangers’ 8-1 victory over the Athletics on Monday.

deGrom gave up one hit, walked none and struck out eight. He improved to 10-9 on the season with the win. deGrom bounced back in a major way after allowing eight runs in last start. He was nearly untouchable against the A’s on Monday, allowing only one hit in a dominant outing. He lowered his ERA to 4.00 this year. deGrom is lined up to face the Rays at home this weekend.

Jacob deGrom allowed eight runs in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss against the White Sox on Tuesday.

deGrom gave up six hits, walked five and struck out two. He fell to 9-9 with the loss. deGrom allowed the first five batters he faced to reach base and ended up allowing six runs in the first inning. It didn’t get much better from there as he couldn’t make it through the fourth inning without allowing two more runs. deGrom was coming off one of his best starts of the year having allowed just one hit against the Nationals in his last start. He has a 4.21 ERA this year. deGrom is lined up to face the Athletics at home next week.

Jacob deGrom delivered a brilliant performance in Thursday night’s victory over the Nationals, striking out 10 batters over six innings of shutout baseball.

The 38-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit in the contest — a one-out single by Brady House in the second inning — while issuing one base on balls. The Rangers only gave him one run of support in this one and deGrom made sure that it stood up, as no Nationals’ hitter advanced past second base against him in the ballgame. He generated 17 swings and misses on 94 offerings — nine on his slider — while registering a strong CSW of 34 percent. Now 9-8 on the season, he’ll look to further improve upon his 3.78 ERA and 1.13 WHIP when he takes on the White Sox in Chicago on Tuesday.

Jacob deGrom (triceps) will start Thursday’s series finale against the Nationals.

It’s the best-case scenario after deGrom was lifted from his previous start against the Angels after two innings with triceps fatigue. The 38-year-old former fantasy ace made it through a bullpen session earlier this week and will take the ball without missing any additional time. The Rangers are probably going to handle his workload with an abundance of caution, but he’s worth starting in nearly all fantasy leagues until further notice.

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker told reporters deGrom could potentially start against the Nationals on Thursday. It’s an extremely encouraging development after the 38-year-old veteran left his previous start against the Angels after two innings with triceps fatigue.

Jacob deGrom is dealing with right triceps fatigue, the Rangers said after lifting him Thursday.

DeGrom didn’t come back out after a long second inning that saw him allow two runs. In all, he threw 55 pitches while getting six outs. His velocity was actually very good; he averaged 98.1 mph with his fastball in the first and 97.5 mph in the second, putting him slightly above his season average of 97.3 mph. We’ll probably find out soon whether the Rangers think an IL stint is in the cards.

Jacob deGrom allowed one run over five innings to pick up a win in the Rangers’ 5-1 victory over the Orioles on Saturday.

Over his five innings, DeGrom struck out nine while generating 13 swings and misses. The only blemish was a solo homer by Jackson Holliday in the first inning, and outside of that the 38-year-old was outstanding. It was the first start since deGrom vetoed a trade to Atlanta, and it’s one that should make the Rangers happy he wanted to stay. He has a very friendly matchup on paper scheduled for Thursday against the Angels.

Jacob deGrom told the Rangers he’d invoke his no-trade clause if the team tried to move him, sources told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The Braves reportedly had inquired about deGrom, who is making $38 million in the fourth year of a five-year, $185 million contract. He has full no-trade protection.

López gave up five runs in just three innings against the Cubs. With Bryce Elder also down and A.J. Smith-Shawver getting sent to the pen, the Braves are running low on starters. López, though, seemed like he was going to be more of a bullpen option in October anyway.

Corbin Carroll had a walkoff two-run homer in the ninth to give the D-backs an 8-7 win over the Marlins on Monday.

Carroll’s homer off Jack Ralston barely stayed fair down the right field line. He also had an RBI single on a blooper to left in the fifth. It was a nice way to shake off a rough start to the month that had seen him go 5-for-33 with a 14/0 K/BB in his last nine games. A loss tonight would have been devastating to Arizona’s postseason chances with the Padres winning. As is, the D-backs are 2 1/2 games behind San Diego, 3 1/2 games behind the Phillies and four games behind the Cubs with 11 to play. They’ll have to overtake one of the three in order to secure a berth.

Corbin Burnes pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs Monday versus the Marlins.

Making his second start since Tommy John, Burnes allowed three runs in the second and then back-to-back homers to Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja in the fourth before eventually departing down 5-4. His cutter was a pretty steady 93 mph early in the game, but it fell off to 91.5 mph in the fourth and fifth. If the regular season were extended by a month, Burnes might be a viable mixed-league starter in October, but the only way we’d know for sure is if the D-backs advance. Burnes should face the Yankees on Sunday.

Morillo kept Arizona’s deficit at one in the top of the ninth and was credited with the win after Corbin Carroll’s walkoff homer. Morillo blew his last save chance Tuesday, but that’s really been his only misstep in months. He has a 2.28 ERA in 59 1/3 innings, and while the D-backs don’t have a closer, he’s probably the team’s best bet for saves the rest of the way.

Alcantara outpitched Corbin Burnes and left with a one-run lead that later increased to three runs, but Arizona was able to come back from there. This makes four straight starts in which Alcantara has given up at least four runs, taking his ERA from 3.38 to 3.86. At least he did rebound some with six strikeouts tonight, matching his total from his three previous starts combined. He’ll face the Padres next.

He also had a steal of second base, with Pavin Smith scoring as the D-backs pulled off a double steal with runners on first and third, Lawlar is hitting .267/.339/.455 with five homers in 113 plate appearances, and he’s overtaken Ryan Waldschmidt in center field in the process.

Jose Siri went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a steal to lead the Angels past the Mariners 6-4 on Monday.

Missing most of last year with injury seemed like it might kill Siri’s career, but he got a chance with the Angels in mid-May and has been decent in hitting .234/.290/.406 in 217 plate appearances. He’s not a starter going forward, and teams typically don’t love using bench spots on players as strikeout prone as Siri, so he’s probably not a lock for a major league contract if he’s set free this winter. The Angels could keep him by paying him around $1.5 million-$2 million in arbitration, but it’d make more sense to set him free and offer him a minor league deal to come back.

Giving up a three-run homer, in this case to Cal Raleigh, would normally be enough to doom Detmers to a loss or a no-decision. However, with some actual run support tonight, he improved to 6-8 on the year. He had been 1-7 with seven no-decisions while allowing two runs or more, though, really, that he’s won just four of 14 starts in which he allowed one or zero runs is just as ugly. He’s due to face the Twins on Saturday, though since he’s now over his career high for innings, the Angels might play around with his schedule and have him make just one more start the rest of the way.
