Roman Anthony (finger) nearing rehab assignment

It’s finally happening. Anthony has been out with a finger injury, eventually diagnosed as a partially torn tendon, since early May. If he starts hitting immediately in the minors, there’s a chance he could rejoin the Red Sox next weekend. If not, the series starting Aug. 24 in Miami seems more realistic.

Anthony has been cleared to resume hitting and is making incremental progress towards returning as he ramps up a hitting progression. The 22-year-old’s timeline remains a bit nebulous as he works his way back from a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger that put him on the injured list back in early May. It sounds like there’s a definite chance he’s back at some point in late August or early September.

Anthony was able to hit off of a tee and take some light flips, the first time that he has done so since he landed on the injured list in early May with a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger. He’s still at least a few weeks away from being an option for the Red Sox, but at least he’s starting to make strides in the right direction.

The Red Sox are referring to the visit as more about “peace of mind,” but it’s obviously concerning that Anthony has made no substantial progress since spraining his wrist and tearing a ligament in his ring finger over two months ago. The 22-year-old will see Dr. Gary Lourie, who is a hand specialist and Braves’ head team physician.

Anthony has not made progress from the hand/wrist injury that he’s been dealing with since the start of May, but this is more of a procedural move to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Romy Gonzalez. Anthony would be eligible to come off the 60-day list in the early portion of July, but there’s no timetable for his return at this point.

Anthony has apparently tried to swing a lighter bat, but hasn’t gotten to a real hitting progression. He’s eight weeks into an 8-12 week timeline for his sprained wrist and torn ligament in his ring finger. At this point, with the Red Sox struggling as badly as they are, we’d expect Anthony to take at least the remaining four weeks on that timeline. That puts him back after the All-Star break.

The 22-year-old has been diagnosed with a small ligament tear in his right ring finger and doesn’t appear close to ramping up baseball activities. He also mentioned that there are no plans to undergo any followup imaging and surgery is not being considered. There is unlikely to be a clear return timetable until Anthony is able to progress to swinging a bat without any symptoms.
