Chris Bassitt allowed two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings while striking out three, picking up a no-decision on Friday over the Rays.

Making his first start since June 3rd, Bassitt had a solid return against the division rival Rays. The righty showed good command of the strike zone and did a nice job of neutralizing a potent Rays lineup. He surrendered an RBI double to Richie Palacios in the second inning to give the Rays their first run of the night and later gave up an RBI single to Victor Mesa Jr. in the third inning to give the Rays their second run. After those two innings, Bassitt settled in to pitch 2 1/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing just one baserunner over that span. He’ll draw a tougher start in his next outing, which is scheduled for Wednesday at home against the Yankees.

Chris Bassitt (back) pitched decently in his second minor league rehab start at Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits over 4 1/3 innings.

Bassitt struck out four batters on the afternoon while issuing one free pass. He threw 67 pitches in the contest, 47 of those for strikes. It’s possible that he’ll require one additional tune-up in the minors before he’s cleared to return to the Orioles’ rotation. It’s also possible that teams could be calling on Bassitt prior to Monday’s trade deadline.

Chris Bassitt (back) will make his second minor league rehab start at Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday.

Bassitt threw 46 pitches over 3 1/3 innings his last time out, so you’d expect him to get somewhere in the range of 75 pitches on Sunday. If all goes well, that could be all he needs before returning from the injured list. It’s also possible that if he shows enough in that outing it could entice interested teams to pick him up from the O’s prior to Monday’s trade deadline.

Bassitt struck out three and walked one while throwing 28 of his 46 pitches for strikes. The only hit he allowed was a solo home run to the Red Sox’s top prospect, Franklin Arias. The 37-year-old likely needs at least two more rehab starts, but you have to wonder if the Orioles would also try to move him at the deadline to a team that wants rotation depth.

Bassitt is recovering from last month’s surgery to remove bone spurs from hiss back. The 37-year-old veteran hasn’t thrown a pitch for the Orioles since June 3. It’s merely a procedural move to free up a spot on Baltimore’s 40-man roster.

Bassitt has been on the IL with back soreness since June 8. Orioles GM Mike Elias said Bassitt will be reevaluated in a “couple of weeks” to see if he can resume throwing. One imagines he’ll be sidelined into August.

Bassitt hit the injured list with lower back discomfort last week. It doesn’t sound like he’s going to require a lengthy absence, but he won’t be an option for the Orioles again until later this month.

Trey Gibson was lit up for six runs over 4 1/3 innings on Saturday in a loss to the Padres.

Gibson was tagged for four runs in a calamitous opening frame, which included two-run homers by Jackson Merrill and Samad Taylor. The 24-year-old pitching prospect managed to get out of the frame without any further damage and saved Baltimore’s bullpen by working into the fifth. He was all over the place from a command standpoint, managing to punch out a season-high seven, while also handing out five walks. It’s unclear whether he’ll get another turn in the rotation, but that’ll depend on whether Chris Bassitt (back) is ready to take the ball next week.

The Brewers probably could have had Tarik Skubal if they were willing to send Henderson to Detroit, but the right-hander again demonstrated today why that would have been a bad idea. It might not be totally correct to say Henderson outdueled Skubal today — one got good defensive support and one didn’t — but he did come away with the win in the matchup. Henderson still hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his 12 starts this year. He’ll take a 7-2 record and a 2.70 ERA into his next start versus the Braves.

After getting Saturday off, Kyle Tucker went 0-for-3 and committed a miscue in right field that led to two runs in Sunday’s loss to the Brewers.

With the Dodgers down 4-1 in the ninth, Tucker struggled with the sun on Jackson Chourio’s fly to deep right and had it go off his glove. Probably because of the sun issues, it wasn’t ruled an error, and given the score, it wasn’t particularly costly. Still, it was another brutal game for Tucker, who finished the week 0-for-19. Maybe he’ll get it together in Coors over the next three days.

The 22-year-old was off to an electric start in his big league career, but he has slumped in August with a strikeout rate pushing 40%. The slump coincides with a stretch in which the entire Pittsburgh lineup has struggled to produce. Valdez will ultimately be a streaky hitter with big power and big swing-and-miss.
