George Kirby allowed eight hits and five runs with three walks and two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Friday.

Kirby is simply not right. His lineup spotted him a two-run lead before he took the mound, and immediately gave one of those runs right back via a solo home run by Yordan Alvarez. It’s hard to fault anyone for that, Alvarez is on another level. Yet, the Astros jumped on Kirby for four more runs the following inning. He fell in love with his sweeper and it forced a few ugly swings, but he couldn’t command it very well. He battled all the way until the fifth inning with just those five runs which saved his line some in what was another rough outing. He now has a 3.89 ERA with 114 strikeouts and 31 walks through 136 2/3 innings as he heads into his next scheduled starts against the Brewers in Milwaukee.

George Kirby was lifted after five innings of one-run ball Saturday against the Rays.

The Mariners really needed one more inning out of Kirby tonight, but it wasn’t in the cards with him requiring 99 pitches to get 15 outs. Michael Rucker ended up allowing two unearned runs in the sixth and taking the loss in a 3-2 game. Kirby remained 8-9 with a 3.68 ERA ahead of a start next Friday against the Astros.

George Kirby fired seven scoreless innings as part of a no-decision against the Twins on Sunday.

He was denied the win after the bullpen faltered in the late innings. Kirby allowed just five hits — all of them singles — while walking one and striking out three. It was a nice bounceback outing for Kirby after he was crushed for seven runs, including four homers, in his last outing against the Rangers. He lowered his ERA to 3.76 with the win, and barring a last-minute trade, he lines up to face the Rays in his next start on Saturday.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports multiple teams have engaged the Mariners in a potential trade for George Kirby.

Passan adds that the sense is that Kirby is available and could be moved prior to Monday’s deadline. He also notes that Seattle has been listening to offer for Emerson Hancock and Luis Castillo. The Mariners have top prospect Kade Anderson knocking on the door of the majors and figure to move at least one, if not more, of their current rotation members. Kirby would net the largest return in any potential trade package, despite holding a pedestrian 3.98 ERA across 120 innings this season.

George Kirby was tagged for four homers and seven runs in four innings by the Rangers in a loss Monday.

Kirby’s velocity dipped quickly today; he averaged 96.9 mph in the first but was down to 95.7 mph in the second and 94.9 mph in the fourth. That’s well off his season average of 96.6 mph, and he gave up more runs today than in his previous four starts combined. It’s the third time in his career that he’s given up four homers; it also happened once in 2022 and once in 2023. Oddly enough, in all three of those starts, he gave up exactly seven runs in between four and 4 2/3 innings. He fell to 8-9 with a 3.98 ERA in advance of a start against the Twins.

George Kirby pitched three-hit ball for six scoreless frames in beating the Reds on Monday.

He struck out six. He threw just 80 pitches to get his 18 outs, and it seems like he still would have had something in the tank for the seventh. However, the Mariners pulled him with a 1-0 lead. It wound up working out just fine, as Nick Davila pitched a perfect top of the seventh, and the Mariners put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Kirby is 8-8 with a 3.57 ERA. He’s fanned 45 in 42 innings since the beginning of June after totaling 59 strikeouts over his first 74 innings. He’ll likely make his next start next Monday in Texas.

George Kirby took the loss on Wednesday in Miami, allowing two earned runs on eight hits over six innings pitched.

Kirby struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone. He allowed a solo homer to Kyle Stowers but pitched well enough to win. The right-hander stumbled a bit from mid-May through mid-June, but he’s been excellent over his past three outings. Kirby has the worst K-BB% of his career this season but has offset it somewhat by inducing more grounders than in the past. This was his final start of the first half. The Mariners host the Giants coming out of the All-Star break.

George Kirby worked eight innings and held the Angels to two runs in a victory Monday.

Kirby struck out seven and allowed no runs over the final five innings of his second eight-inning start of the year. He’s turned in four straight quality starts while trading four-seamers for sinkers of late. That’s especially been the case his last two starts, both of which were wins. With the Mariners having Wednesday and Monday off, Kirby might not start again until next Tuesday. Or it’s possible he’ll be part of a piggyback tandem on Sunday.

Logan Gilbert and Emerson Hancock are no longer piggybacking during Saturday’s game against the Guardians.

We need to come up with a better term than piggybacking. Seriously. Gilbert takes the ball for a traditional start with Hancock doing the same for Sunday’s series finale. The decision pushes George Kirby back to Monday’s opener against the Angels. The whole Mariners rotation situation is challenging to understand and remains a massive headache for fantasy managers. There have to be some changes coming from a personnel standpoint after next month’s All-Star break because this seems too chaotic to work as a strategic approach for an extended period.

George Kirby held the Pirates to two runs — one earned — in six innings Tuesday for his first win since May 11.

It wasn’t a particularly easy effort tonight, as Kirby allowed eight hits. Still, they accounted for only 10 total bases between them, and Kirby was good about spreading them around. He was 0-5 with a 6.27 ERA in his previous six starts, though the two before this one, both against Baltimore, were already improvements. He’s 6-7 with a 3.94 ERA overall. With the Mariners planning to throw both Logan Gilbert and Emerson Hancock on Saturday, Kirby should start against Sunday against the Guardians.

George Kirby lost to the Orioles after allowing three runs in six innings on Wednesday.

That’s the same line he had in losing to the Orioles in Baltimore last week. It makes four times this season that Kirby has turned in a quality start and lost anyway. That’s the most quality-start losses in MLB, and Dustin May and Yoshinobu Yamamoto are the only other pitchers with three such games. Kirby will face the Pirates in Pittsburgh next time out.

Báez will be making his MLB debut after hitting 34 homers and slashing .256/.328/.573 in Triple-A. The 23-year-old has immense power, but he does have the potential for contact issues as seen in 136 strikeouts over 103 games. That being said, he also has stolen 21 bases — after stealing 54 in 2025 — so there’s tremendous reward that comes with the inherited risks in Báez’s profile.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Simeon Woods Richardson will work “in some capacity” during Saturday’s game against the Yankees.

Braydon Fisher is going to get the start against the Yankees on Saturday, but he won’t be able to go more than a turn through the lineup at most. Woods Richardson seems likely to be the bulk hurler for that game, but even with a chance to pick up multiple innings and potentially a win, he offers more risk than reward at this point.

Freeland has allowed three earned runs in his three starts this month, lowering his ERA from 7.34 to 6.27. He’ll make his next start at home against the Dodgers. It’ll be his first time facing them in Coors this year after giving up 14 earned runs over nine innings in two starts in L.A.

Roupp has lost four straight starts, yielding 14 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings in the process, and the Giants are an incredible 2-16 in his last 18 turns. He’s slated to pitch in Cleveland next time out.

Maybe he can change that if he stays hot this weekend.

It’s McNeil’s fourth career game with three extra-base hits; he last did it by collecting two homers and a double in Coors Field in June 2025. McNeil is now sitting at .409/.437/.561 in 21 games in the second half. He even has five steals during the span, which is four more than he had in the first half and two more than he had in 122 games for the Mets last season. As the Athletics’ current leadoff man against righties, he’s worth playing in mixed leagues when the team is at home in West Sacramento.
