Kelenic heads to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as organizational depth for the final month of the season. It would be extremely surprising if he wound up making it to New York given their present outfield depth that doesn’t include Aaron Judge (rib) coming back from the injured list. The 27-year-old former top prospect has hit .219 (16-for-73) with one homer and six RBI in 36 games between the Rangers and White Sox this season.

This is the third time that the Rangers have DFA’d the former top prospect. Each previous time he has returned on a minor league contract and eventually earned another chance with the Rangers. It’s possible that happens again this time around, though his days of fantasy relevancy are in the rearview mirror.

So, he must be receiving interest from another major league team or perhaps a club in Asia. Kelenic hit .213/.304/.295 in 69 plate appearances for the White Sox and Rangers in major league stints earlier this season.

The 26-year-old was one of the more promising prospects in the game just a couple years ago, but has yet to find sustained success at the major-league level. He’ll likely continue to get opportunities as a reclamation project, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to envision him developing into an impact fantasy contributor at this stage.

That’s obviously not very impressive, but it’s interesting that he did have eight barrels and a 55 percent hard-hit rate. Statcast gave him an xSLG of .526. He’ll head to Triple-A for now, but he could see time in the Texas outfield later.
