Ryne Nelson (elbow) faced hitters in a 21-pitch simulated game on Tuesday.

Nelson is working his way back from an elbow strain that put him on the shelf back in mid-June. It might be unrealistic to expect him to make it back before the end of the regular season, but he could be available to pitch in relief if Arizona makes the playoffs.
CC on Tolle's hug: 'I would've ran right through'

Ceddanne Rafaela (quad) said he doesn’t think it’s “something I’m going to be out (with) for a while.”

The young Red Sox star sounded like he didn’t think he’d miss much more time with the quad. Manager Chad Tracy was a little less optimistic, saying “you get a better idea over the next couple of days, like you know how much improvement you’re seeing and that’ll be easier to answer.” Rafaela is probably best considered day-to-day but there’s a real chance he misses more of this weekend’s series against the Orioles.

Carlos Correa (ankle) will begin a baserunning progression and take at-bats in bridge games at the Astros spring training complex this weekend.

The Athletic’s Chandler Rome believes Correa’s return, should it happen, would push Jose Altuve to left field and Isaac Paredes to second base. We remain without a definitive return timeline, but the fact that there’s a roughly 800-word section from a beat writer about what could happen if Correa returns leads us to believe there’s a real chance it happens.

Hao-Yu Lee is batting third in game one of Detroit’s doubleheader against the Guardians on Friday.

Lee has been red-hot and has received a lineup elevation against LHP Logan Allen. The 23-year-old second baseman has hit second, seventh, ninth, fifth, second, and now third over the past six days while starting every game — of his 12 starts in the top four slots of the order, 10 of them have come since July 28 and he’s hitting .303/.351/.480 since the start of June with seven homers and two stolen bases. Lee’s not a must-roster shallow player, but since he figures to start plenty down the stretch he’s a reasonable add in 12-team leagues.

White Sox optioned C Drew Romo to Triple-A Charlotte

With Kyle Teel (ankle) back from the injured list, the White Sox no longer need to keep Romo on the active roster. Jake Rogers, who has no minor league options, will remain as the backup catcher.

Teel has been out since the end of July with an ankle sprain, and he has also missed time this season with a knee injury. The 24-year-old has hit .190/.271/.317 in 19 games this season.

Guardians designated RHP Carlos Hernández for assignment.

Tough break for Hernández, who allowed two runs on five hits in three innings in two separate appearances on Wednesday and Thursday. The Guardians will now let him go to get fresh arms into their bullpen. Hernández could opt to return on a minor league deal.

Guardians recalled RHP Austin Peterson from Triple-A Columbus

Peterson has a 4.53 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and 102/34 K/BB ratio in 95 1/3 innings across 21 appearances (19 starts) at Triple-A this season. He will give the Guardians some length during Friday’s doubleheader and would be making his MLB debut if he gets into a game.

Guardians activated RHP Slade Cecconi (arm fatigue) from the 15-day injured list.

Cecconi was placed on the injured list with arm fatigue about a month ago, but he will return in time for Friday’s doubleheader. Cecconi had been set to make another rehab appearance, so he is unlikely to be fully built up, but there’s a chance he could give his team a few innings of work on Friday.
