Rhett Lowder gives up seven runs to Brewers

It’s a decent rebound from Lowder’s last start, when he gave up seven runs in 3 1/3 innings against these same Dodgers. Still, it’s another loss, leaving him 6-11 with a 5.79 ERA. He’s had just six quality starts in 24 tries on the year. He’s in line to make his next start Sunday against the Cubs.

It’s the second straight outing in which Lowder has allowed seven runs, and he’s now 6-10 with a 5.81 ERA for the season. Unfortunately, he’s due to go up against the Dodgers again next week and likely the Cubs after that.

Thanks to a six-run top of the sixth, Lowder got a win in a game in which he was outperformed by the opposing starter (David Peterson allowed two runs over five innings). Lowder went 3-1 in August despite a middling 4.34 ERA and six homers allowed in 29 innings. He’ll take on the Padres next week.

Lowder gave up six hits, walked one and struck out one. He improved to 5-8 with the win. Lowder gave the Reds some length by going six innings and Cincinnati’s offense supported him with eight runs while he was still in the game. He has a 5.13 ERA. Lowder is lined up to face the Cubs on the road next weekend.

Lowder authored the longest start of his professional career, helping to spare Cincinnati’s bullpen during the nightcap affair of a twin bill at Great American Ball Park. The 24-year-old gave up eight hits, including a solo homer to Iván Herrera. He finished with five strikeouts and also issued two walks. He’ll close out a two-start week with a road matchup against the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Lowder won three of his first five starts this season, but has since won only one of his last 16 starts. He has a 5.15 ERA. Lowder is lined up to face the Cardinals at home next week, though he’s not a recommended fantasy option.

Lowder now sits at 3-7 on the season with an uninspiring 5.42 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and a 70/37 K/BB ratio over 83 innings. He’ll try to turn things around when he squares off against the Athletics on Wednesday.

The right-hander punched out four batters on the evening while issuing two walks. Lowder carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning but ran into trouble as he plunked Ivan Herrera and then issued a two-out walk to Nathan Chursh. Blaze Jordan followed with a two-run double, which would be the lone hit that Lowder would allow, and caused all the damage against him. He got nine whiffs on 76 offerings on the night, posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll try to get back in the win column as he carries a 5.61 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and a 65/37 K/BB ratio (77 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Guardians.

Lowder threw 48 pitches today. The Rockies swung at 33 of them and put 16 into play for 11 hits. It was Coors Field, but this was still a rare pounding. Since 2020, he’s the ninth road pitcher to give up eight runs in Coors and the second to surrender 11 hits in fewer than three innings, joining Miles Mikolas on Aug. 9, 2022. Lowder dropped to 3-7 with a 5.75 ERA. He belongs in Triple-A at this point, but it probably won’t happen with Nick Lodolo on the IL. It might later; if the Reds stick him in the minors for about six weeks, he’d conclude the season with just less than two years of service time, pushing his free agency back by a year.
