Mickey Moniak homers, knocks in four runs

The Phillies needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to accommodate the return of Tanner Banks on Sunday and Cairo found himself on the outside looking in. The 25-year-old infielder has had a disappointing season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, slashing .227/.378/.298 with four homers, 35 RBI and 25 stolen bases (in 36 attempts) over 516 plate appearances. It’s likely he’ll slip through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as extra infield depth for the Phillies.

With Tanner Banks (forearm) returning from the injured list on Sunday, someone needed to get the boot to clear a spot in the Phillies’ bullpen and it looks like Holman drew the short straw this time. The 26-year-old righty made just one appearance in his time with the big league club, giving up four unearned runs in 1/3 of an inning.

The 34-year-old southpaw rejoins the Phillies’ bullpen after being shelved since early July due to a forearm strain. Before landing on the injured list, he had posted a miserable 7.14 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and a 32/13 K/BB ratio across 29 innings in 28 outings. Grant Holman was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move to clear a spot in the Phillies’ bullpen.

While he’s active and in uniform on Sunday, the 26-year-old speedster is not in the Nationals’ starting lineup for the club’s series finale against the Angels. Eddy Yean was optioned to Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move to clear a spot on the Nationals’ active roster.

It’s nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 24-year-old outfielder. James Wood will shift to right field with Andres Chaparro drawing a start as the Nats’ designated hitter. He’ll bat third against Angels’ inconsistent right-hander Grayson Rodriguez.

Edman has been a fixture atop the Dodgers’ lineup since Shohei Ohtani was shelved, so he’ll get a well-deserved day off in this one. Miguel Rojas will cover second base in his absence and will hit eighth against Marlins’ right-hander Eury Perez.

It appears to be nothing more than a routine day of rest for the 21-year-old shortstop. Jose Caballero will start in his place and bat ninth for the Bombers against Mets’ right-hander Christian Scott.

Flaherty pitched at Triple-A Toledo last Sunday and then threw a multi-inning simulated game at Comerica Park over the weekend. He’ll get one final tune-up in the minors before being cleared to rejoin the Tigers’ rotation for one or two starts at the end of September.

The Nationals announced that Riley Cornelio will open on Sunday, with no mention of Irvin being scratched for any reason, so the expectation is that he’ll function in a bulk role. The 29-year-old right-hander remains a middling streaming option, though his chances of earning a victory improve slightly in a bulk role.

Karros had started each of the first five games since returning from the concussion injured list, so they’ll give him a breather in this one. Vimael Machin will start in his place at the hot corner and will bat seventh against Tigers’ right-hander Jackson Jobe.
