Yesavage, who threw a 34-pitch bullpen session in Florida on Monday, figures to make it back to Toronto’s pitching equation before the regular season concludes, but he’s at least a few steps away based on his throwing progression. The 23-year-old starter underwent left knee meniscus surgery back in early August. It sounds like he’s going to need at least one minor league rehab start next week before he’s an option for the Blue Jays again.

It seems unrealistic that he’ll return before the conclusion of the regular season, especially with only two weeks left on the calendar, but there’s optimism he’ll be ready to take the ball in October. There’s a slight possibility he’ll make it back for the final weekend of the year, but that’s hardly a reason for fantasy managers to stash him. He’s expected to make a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Buffalo in the coming days.

The dynamic 23-year-old’s potential return in the closing moments of the year probably depends on whether Toronto has any chance at a playoff spot. It seems highly unlikely he’ll offer enough volume to make a significant fantasy impact down the home stretch, which means managers in shallow mixed leagues are safe to move on completely.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Trey Yesavage (knee) is dealing with a meniscus injury and will visit a specialist.

Surgery “is always a possibility,” when a player sees a specialist, said Schneider per Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi. This is not a promising update for Yesavage’s chances of returning to the rotation any time soon. Given Toronto’s position in the standings, it would be surprising if they tried to push him to fight through this towards the end of the season if they had any doubt about it.

The latest report was that the Blue Jays were still waiting on MRI results, but it’s clear that they felt Yesavage would not be a good bet to make his next start or the one after. The Blue Jays didn’t fully sell at the deadline, but their playoff hopes remain slim, so they may not be inclined to rush Yesavage and have him pitch at less than 100 percent. We’ll wait for the MRI results before we know more about how long he will be sidelined.

He departed after firing a pair of scoreless innings. The 23-year-old’s absence would be a crushing blow in the middle of an already dismal season for the Blue Jays. He’ll undergo further evaluation and imaging to determine the severity of the issue. It certainly seems like a potential injured list situation. There should be additional clarity on his status later this week.

Yesavage struck out four, walked three, and allowed three hits. He lowered his ERA to 3.73 with a strong outing against the highest-scoring lineup in MLB. The 23-year-old set an impossibly high bar with his October performance a season ago, but he’s held his own despite a limited minor-league track record. One concern is that he has four starts with five or more walks this season. Cutting those down is the key to a breakout over the final two months or in 2027. He’ll draw the Astros in Houston next time out.

Lovullo also noted that veteran right-hander Zac Gallen will be moved to the team’s bullpen to free up a spot in the rotation for Soroka. The 29-year-old hurler has pitched well in 19 appearances (18 starts) this season, posting a 3.53 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 95/25 K/BB ratio over 99 1/3 innings of work.
