Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubles versus Orioles

The 27-year-old slugger has been a major disappointment for the Blue Jays this season, slashing .260/.332/.356 with a paltry nine home runs and 57 RBI in 609 plate appearances. He’ll be a polarizing option heading into 2027 fantasy drafts. Charles McAdoo will start in his place at first base and bat cleanup for the Jays on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.

Guerrero Jr. was out on Monday with a back injury and was originally held out of the lineup on Wednesday before being a late addition. He’s clearly not 100 percent, but the Blue Jays will be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss, so there is incentive for their star to try to play through the discomfort.

It’s been an abysmal lost season for Guerrero, who has gone from one of the most fearsome hitters on the planet during last year’s postseason to a non-factor at one of the thinnest position groups in the fantasy landscape. A compelling explanation, most likely due to playing through physical issues, will be unearthed at some point in the next few months, but it doesn’t make things any easier for fantasy managers to stomach. The 27-year-old franchise cornerstone is sitting out after making an early exit from Sunday’s game against the Rangers with lower back tightness. It’ll be rookie Sean Keys taking over at the cold corner.

He’ll probably want to get back out there Monday, but it’s easy to imagine Guerrero getting shut down if the Blue Jays are eliminated from contention sometime this week.

No word yet from the Jays on what may have happened, but Guerrero was replaced when the Jays took the field in the bottom of the fourth inning. He had been 1-for-2 with a single prior to exiting. Look for the team to provide an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.

Yes, that is a real thing. Coming into Sunday’s action, Guerrero was without a home run in Toronto through 286 plate appearances this season. He finally snapped the incredible streak as part of back-to-back-back blasts with George Springer and Kazuma Okamoto in the fifth inning. The season has been a frustrating one, but his bat has perked up a bit in September.

One game to sum up Guerrero’s season. He hit the ball 110.0, 110.1 and 108.7 mph in his first three at-bats today, but they were all grounders and were turned into four outs. It’s just the 17th time this year that a player has topped 108 mph in exit velocity three times in a game.

Wow! A home run! He only had one in the entire second half before this and funny enough, it shouldn’t even have happened. Angel Genao made a crucial throwing error with two outs in the second inning which set the stage for Guerrero’s three-run shot. He also plated a run in the first inning with a double and had another run-scoring hit in the sixth as the Blue Jays built their massive lead in this blowout victory. It’s better late than never for Guerrero to find one of his patented hot streaks before the season ends.

Guerrero returns to Toronto’s lineup for Saturday’s early-afternoon matinee against the Yankees following a one-week absence due to a concussion. The positive news is that he cleared final concussion protocol after reaching base safely in all three plate appearances during a minor league rehab game for Low-A Dunedin earlier this week. He’s gone more than a calendar year without homering in the Rogers Centre and holds a calamitous .693 OPS with seven homers in 115 games heading into the final five weeks of the season.

Jays’ skipper John Schneider told reporters that the 27-year-old slugger has passed all of his concussion tests and has been cleared to return after going 1-for-1 with a double and a pair of walks in a minor league rehab game at High-A Dunedin on Thursday. Fantasy managers can anticipate having him back in lineups on Saturday.
