This opens up a spot for Seth Etherton on the 40-man roster. Bass had a 7.59 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A Omaha before being demoted to Wichita earlier this month. The 24-year-old is a future middle reliever at best.

Cardinals LHP prospect Quinn Mathews allowed seven runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings for Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday.

Mathews also struck out six but walked three and allowed two home runs. The 25-year-old had a tremendous 2024 season in the minors and was solid last season in Triple-A after battling some arm fatigue. He had one solid start to begin this season, but has now allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings while walking seven and striking out 11. He is likely behind both Richard Fitts and Hunter Dobbins for a potential call-up.

CHC 2nd Baseman #18

Cubs INF prospect Pedro Ramírez went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and three RBI for Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old is slashing .311/.367/.667 in 11 games with four home runs, 11 RBI, and three steals. He had only eight home runs in 129 games at Double-A last year, so the early power surge is interesting to see. Ramírez can play both second base and third base and could be an option during the season if the Cubs deal with injuries.

Aidan Miller

PHI Shortstop #87

Phillies INF prospect Aidan Miller (back) has resumed swinging a bat.

Miller had been shut down due to ongoing lower back soreness that the Phillies acknowledged is an “ongoing issue.” That’s a bit worrisome for the 21-year-old prospect, but it’s nice to see that he has begun swinging a bat again. The Phillies are obviously taking things very slowly with their top prospect, but there is still some optimism that he will debut in Philadelphia at some point this season.

Kevin McGonigle is not in the lineup on Thursday against the Twins.

It’s the rookie’s first day off of the season, and it’s just a routine off day. Javier Baez will play shortstop and bat seventh with Colt Keith at first base and Gleyber Torres at DH. McGonigle is off to a strong start to his MLB career, hitting .292/.370/.438 with a 7/6 K/BB ratio in 12 games.

Kelly has allowed three runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief so far this season. He will likely get another chance in the Athletics’ bullpen in the near future.

Athletics recalled RHP Jack Perkins from Triple-A Las Vegas

Perkins has been pitching out of the bullpen in Triple-A, allowing four runs on three hits in 7 2/3 innings with a 9/7 K/BB ratio. The Athletics do have an open spot in the rotation, but it seems that J.T. Ginn is most likely to get that spot with Perkins staying in a swing role. Perkins has the stuff to succeed as a late-inning reliever and could be intriguing for fantasy if he works his way into the rotation or closer’s role. He’s a name to monitor.

Marlins optioned RHP Ryan Gusto to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Gusto was up while Pete Fairbanks was on the Paternity List, so he will now head back to Triple-A after throwing one scoreless inning out of the bullpen for the Marlins.

Kyle Stowers

MIA Left Fielder #28
Marlins manager Clayton McCullough says that OF Kyle Stowers (hamstring) could begin a rehab assignment as early as this weekend.

Stowers has been managing a hamstring strain and has not yet debuted this season. It sounds like the Marlins may also look to manage his hamstring by allowing him to play some games at first base as he returns. That could open up more at-bats in the outfield for Griffin Conine, who is off to a good start.

Jazz Chisholm Jr.

NYY 2nd Baseman #13
Jazz Chisholm and Trent Grisham are not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Athletics.

It’s just a routine day off for both, but it does come against a left-handed pitcher, so it makes sense for Aaron Boone to choose today as a rest. It’s a little shocking that Jazz has a day off, but struggling Ryan McMahon will be in the lineup against a lefty. Amed Rosario will play second base, and Randal Grichuk will play left field with Cody Bellinger in center.
