Cubs sent OF Luis Montanez outright to Triple-A Iowa.
Some more housekeeping for the 40-man roster. Montanez, who turns 30 next month, batted .222 (12-for-54) with one home run and nine RBI in 36 games with the Cubs this season.

Mets recalled RHP Austin Warren from Triple-A Syracuse
Warren has allowed one run on two hits in 3 2/3 innings for the Mets so far this season and has a 2.77 ERA in 61 2/3 career MLB innings across six seasons. He’ll provide depth out of the bullpen for the time being.
How does Crochet on IL impact Red Sox?
Eric Samulski recaps the news that Boston Red Sox' pitcher Garrett Crochet has been moved to the IL (shoulder) and what this means for Boston's pitching options.

Mets designated RHP Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment.
This is an interesting move. Edwards Jr. threw 2 2/3 innings on Wednesday, so the Mets clearly felt that they needed a fresh arm in the bullpen; however, he has allowed only one run on three hits in six innings for the Mets this season while striking out 11 batters and walking four. There’s a chance some team claims him on waivers.

Mets placed OF Luis Robert Jr. on the 10-day injured list with lumbar spine disc herniation.
Robert Jr. hasn’t played in three games, so this always seemed possible. The 28-year-old has played over 110 games only once in his career, and it seems like injuries will be a factor in yet another season for him. The Mets will likely continue to start Tyrone Taylor in center field with MJ Melendez in left field until Juan Soto is healthy enough to be in the outfield. A trade could certainly be in the cards for the Mets if they don’t want this season to get away from them.

Reds placed LHP Brandon Williamson on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder fatigue.
As of now, the Reds are saying this is nothing more than fatigue, but it’s a situation we’ll monitor. The left-hander was potentially set to lose his spot in the rotation with Nick Lodolo (blister) coming back, but now there is a clear spot for Lodolo to return to.

Ben Joyce (shoulder) allowed one hit and walked one in a scoreless inning for High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday.
This was Joyce’s first outing since last year’s shoulder surgery. There is no Statcast data for that level, but the broadcast claimed he was sitting between 97-100 mph on his fastball and touched 101 in the outing, which makes us feel good about the health of his shoulder. He’ll likely need a couple of weeks of rehab appearances, but the Angels bullpen desperately needs him, so we might be nearing the amount of time to stash him.
  • AZ 3rd Baseman #28
Nolan Arenado went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in a 6-2 win over the Brewers on Wednesday.
Perhaps the rumors of Arenado’s demise were a tad overblown? He clocked a 411 foot, go-ahead three-run home run off Brandon Sproat which wound up being the difference for his Diamondbacks. That gave him five home runs and 17 RBI with a .284 batting average and .787 OPS so far this season. Just be advised, he’s still not hitting the ball very hard despite these quality counting stats.
  • AZ Starting Pitcher #57
Eduardo Rodriguez allowed five hits and two runs with four walks and four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Brewers on Wednesday.
It was frustrating for Rodriguez to labor through the fourth inning after his lineup jumped out to a big lead in the top of the frame. After they put up a four-spot, it took him nearly 30 pitches to get through it and those struggles seemed to force manager Torey Lovullo to have a quick hook on him after a two out walk in the fifth. Not getting the win was a shame, but he didn’t have anything close to his best stuff or command here. He’s lined up to face the Pirates and Mets in a two-start week coming up.
  • MIL 2nd Baseman #2
Brice Turang went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run, and a run batted in on Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
Turang just keeps on chugging along. Two more doubles here gives him 13 extra-base hits on the season and somehow looks like a certified power hitter at this point. He’s further improved on his much improved batted ball metrics from last year and has the profile of someone that could wind up as the number one second baseman by season’s end.
  • MIL Starting Pitcher #23
Brandon Sproat allowed six hits and four runs with two walks and five strikeouts across 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Recently, it’s felt like Sproat was getting over the hump. He’d pitched into the sixth inning in consecutive starts and allowed just four runs in the process. Then, he struck out the first four batters he faced in this game and the excitement grew. Just as it began to seem real, the wheels fell off in the fourth inning. Adrian Del Castillo golfed a sinker for a solo home run with one out and three batters later Nolan Arenado hit a three-run shot on nearly the same pitch, but from the perspective of a right-handed batter. He only threw seven sinkers all game, and two left the yard. Well, he’s lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Cardinals and Yankees.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #40
Luis Severino limited the Royals to one run and four hits over seven innings in the Athletics’ 5-2 victory Wednesday.
The run came in the first on a very odd play. Singles from Bobby Witt Jr. and Carter Jensen put runners on the corners with one out. Salvador Perez then broke his bat on a soft liner to short that Jacob Wilson either dropped intentionally or got spooked by a bat shard. Wilson picked the ball up and threw to second for an out, but Witt scored just ahead of the relay home. Severino went on to strike out eight and walk two in his second win of the year. It’s just his fourth quality start in 18 tries in home games in Sacramento since he signed with the A’s a year ago. He’ll pitch in Philadelphia next week.
