The hard-throwing 23-year-old has been an afterthought in shallow fantasy leagues this spring, mostly because of Sutter Health Park’s hitter-friendly tendencies. He’s talented enough to be a viable streaming option in favorable road matchups.

Nelson piled up four strikeouts, issued one walk and threw 37 of 56 pitches for strikes in his latest spring outing. He surrendered only two hits, but both wound up leaving the ballpark courtesy of Andy Ibáñez and Max Muncy in the second and fourth innings. The 28-year-old righty has quietly morphed into an impactful fantasy contributor over the past two seasons but the lack of significant strikeout upside limits his appeal to late-round territory in drafts.

Encarnacion’s homer was hit 109 mph off Bailey Falter. It was his first in 34 at-bats as he works to secure a spot on the Giants’ bench as a platoon guy against lefties.

Mahle averaged 91.5 mph with his fastball today, which was down 1.1 mph from his first two starts and 0.5 mph from his 2025 average. It’s also kind of odd that he’s already walked seven batters in six innings this spring. Even though he pitched to a 2.18 ERA in his 16 starts for Texas last year, no one wanted to make a big bet on Mahle in the offseason, forcing him to settle on a one-year, $10 million deal with the Giants. He comes with too many question marks to be draft-worthy in mixed leagues right now.

Bailey got double plays to escape the first two innings, but he had no such luck in the third. Falter has given up six runs in 6 2/3 innings this spring, and one wonders if the Royals have some regrets about tendering him back in November and signing him for $3.6 million. He should still have a spot in middle relief.

Toro finishes Pool A play 7-for-15 with five RBI. Marlins teammates Otto Lopez and Owen Caissie both knocked in two runs today. Even though Puerto Rico clinched a quarterfinal spot a couple of days ago, Canada, which needed to win its final two games to advance, is the Pool A winner by virtue of beating Puerto Rico head-to-head. That means they’ll face the Pool B runnerup, which would be Team USA if Italy beats Mexico tonight.

Quantrill got the win as Canada advanced to the WBC quarterfinals. It looked like James Paxton would get the save, but he was lifted after 2 2/3 scoreless innings and 49 pitches in order to keep him eligible to pitch Friday. Quantrill could start again if Canada makes the finals. If not, the veteran big leaguer will go back to trying to win a spot on the Rangers’ staff. He gave up seven runs over four innings in his two spring appearances before joining Team Canada.

No word yet on the severity. However, with Seattle’s season-opener roughly two weeks away it’s possible he’ll require a trip to the injured list. The versatile 30-year-old’s absence could potentially open the door for sizzling-hot former top prospect Brennan Davis to win a spot on the club’s Opening Day roster.
