Bruns is a commitment to Mississippi State, but that’s not likely to be where he heads to, now. The southpaw has a plus fastball/slider combination, and he can also mix in a curveball that gets close to that level. The issue with Bruns is throwing strikes, and right now his command is more detriment than potential helper. Considering his age, there’s time for that to happen, but if not, he could be an excellent reliever with that stuff.

Both runs came on a homer from Michael Arroyo. Haynes, 23, should open the year with Triple-A El Paso, but he projects as an up-and-down arm at this stage of his career.

Dunning did issue a pair of walks, but allowed just a hit and picked up a strikeout before exiting. The 31-year-old is with the Mariners on a minor-league contract and will be a depth piece behind Seattle’s impressive five-man rotation to open 2026.

This move was inevitable, as the 30-year-old hurler is expected to miss most of the 2026 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. It was done now though to free up a spot on the O’s 40-man roster for the addition of Bryan Ramos.

Those were Yoshida’s only two plate appearances before he was lifted. The Red Sox would surely still like to find a taker for Yoshida, who is owed $36 million over the next two years, but he could still contribute as a DH if any of the team’s top four outfielders get hurt. While his .282/.337/.425 line in three years as a major leaguer isn’t quite what the Red Sox were hoping for when they signed him, it still amounts to a 109 OPS+.

Every other Orioles regular came out after two at-bats, but Alonso pushed for a third after a groundout and a lineout. He got it and hit his first homer in an Orioles uniform, taking Bradley Hanner out to left. The Orioles had Alonso hitting second behind Gunnar Henderson in today’s lineup, and one wonders if that might be the Opening Day combo with probable leadoff man Jackson Holliday and frequent No. 2 hitter Jordan Westburg sidelined. Hitting second would be a little different for Alonso, but he has started there 133 times in his career. 70 of those games came in his rookie season in 2019.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. soft single produced the only baserunner against Rogers. The lefty’s velocity is already right where it was in 2025, and the only question he’s facing this spring is whether it will be or Kyle Bradish who gets named Baltimore’s Opening Day starter.

The Orioles’ announcers figured Gibson was one and done after a scoreless seventh, but he came back out for a quick eighth and the Orioles just let him finish from there. Gibson allowed two hits, walked none and struck out three. Arguably the Orioles’ best pitching prospect at this point, he’s likely to open up in Triple-A and spend the bulk of the season there.

Rodríguez wasn’t working at peak velocity just yet, but even so, he did a nice job against an Orioles lineup stacked with regulars. He’s taken over as the Yankees’ No. 1 pitching prospect in the year since he was acquired from the Red Sox for Carlos Narváez, and he might get a chance to contribute in the majors this summer.

Nicholson-Smith notes that other teams are still in the mix as well, but the Blue Jays appear to be his most serious suitor at the moment on a one-year deal. The 41-year-old hurler made 17 starts for the Jays in 2025, posting an underwhelming 5.19 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and an 82/23 K/BB ratio across 85 innings of work. With Shane Bieber set to open the season on the injured list, the Jays look to be in the market for additional rotation depth and a reunion with Scherzer seemingly makes sense for both sides.

The Cardinals claimed the 23-year-old infielder off of waivers from the Orioles during the first week of February and now he’ll rejoin the O’s after the Cardinals designated him for assignment on Monday. With Jordan Westburg set to open the season on the injured list, Ramos will add extra depth at third base.
