  • SD Left Fielder #26
According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Padres signed outfielder Tim Locastro to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
The 31-year-old has become a fourth outfielder with speed and plus defense. Last season with the Mets, he played in 41 games, registering a .731 OPS with two homers and six steals in just 67 plate appearances. The Padres have a lack of outfield depth after trading Juan Soto and Trent Grisham to the Yankees, so Locastro could compete with prospects Jackson Merrill and Grant Pauley for the final outfield spot on the MLB roster.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #29
Tarik Skubal’s right hand has continued to check out fine after additional tests, and he’s expected to make his next start Wednesday against the Royals.
Skubal was hit on the glove hand by a liner during Thursday’s game. He’s currently lined up to pitch Sept. 18, 24 and 29, with the last of those being the season finale. There’s a good chance he’ll be scratched from that one unless it proves playoff relevant.
  • NYM Designated Hitter #28
J.D. Martinez is sitting Wednesday against Aaron Nola and the Phillies.
Martinez is currently in a 3-for-25 slump. Also likely factoring in here is that he’s 3-for-19 with no extra-base hits and 10 strikeouts lifetime versus Nola. Plus, the Mets’ defense is quite obviously improved with Jesse Winker and DH and Tyrone Taylor starting in the outfield. Martinez should be back in the lineup against Kolby Allard on Saturday.
  • PHI Left Fielder #12
Kyle Schwarber is in the lineup as a DH on Friday after missing Wednesday’s game with a sore elbow.
Schwarber left Tuesday’s game with the elbow injury sustained during an awkward slide.
  • PHI Catcher #10
J.T. Realmuto is back behind the plate for Friday’s game against the Mets.
Realmuto last played a week ago, when he suffered a knee contusion that cost him five games. He’s batting fifth tonight.
  • KC Left Fielder #1
The Royals have MJ Melendez on the bench against a right-hander in Friday’s game against the Pirates.
Melendez had easily his best month of the year in August, hitting .311/.363/.581, but he’s cooled considerably since, starting off 4-for-31 this month. That’s apparently why he’s sitting in favor of Robbie Grossman, Tommy Pham and Hunter Renfroe today, unless there’s an injury the team has yet to make anyone aware of.
  • DET Third Baseman #44
Justyn-Henry Malloy is out of Detroit’s lineup for a fifth straight game Friday.
Matt Vierling is playing third base tonight, so there was an opening for Malloy in the outfield. However, the team is going with the newly activated Wenceel Pérez there. Especially now that Pérez is back, Malloy is going to find time against right-handers very scarce. The rookie is 2-for-12 in two starts and four appearances off the bench since being recalled on Sept. 1.
  • DET Catcher #38
Dillon Dingler is in the Tigers starting lineup Friday for the first time since being scratched Tuesday due to an illness.
Dingler came off the bench Thursday and had a key passed ball in the ninth inning of the loss to the Rockies. The start tonight is his first in six days.
  • BAL Third Baseman #16
Coby Mayo is back on the bench Friday for a second straight game.
Mayo started consecutive games at third base Monday and Tuesday, but the Orioles lifted him after six innings for defensive purposes Tuesday and didn’t use him at all Wednesday. It’s again Emmanuel Rivera starting at third base tonight.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #63
White Sox placed RHP Matt Foster on the 15-day injured list retroactive to September 12 with a lower back disc herniation.
That doesn’t sound good. With so little time left in the season, it’s fair to wonder if Foster will return before the year is over. The 29-year-old right-hander had a 2.70 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings for the White Sox this year.
  • CWS Relief Pitcher #46
White Sox recalled LHP Jake Eder from Triple-A Charlotte.
Eder was up with the White Sox as the extra man for a doubleheader earlier this season, but the 25-year-old is still yet to appear in a major league game. All of his minor league appearances this year came as a starting pitcher, but he figures to be used out of the bullpen in Chicago. Eder had a 9.87 ERA in nine starts at Triple-A.
