Mason Montgomery is starting the second game of a doubleheader against the Guardians on Saturday.

It sounds like this will be a bullpen game, as Montgomery is not someone who is built up enough to go more than an inning or two. Fantasy managers looking to steal a win should look elsewhere, as it’s hard to fathom he’ll go the necessary number of innings to qualify.

Mets' ace Scott is finding his groove again
James Schiano discusses Mets' pitcher Christian Scott's strong stretch over his last six starts and why the Mets right-hander could emerge as a top-50 starting pitcher for the rest of the season.

Ryan Helsley (elbow) told reporters that he’ll have a longer rest time than his previous stint on the injured list.

“Just trying to make sure that it’s out of there,” Helsley said. “The only way, logically, is to give it a little bit more time.” Helsley missed almost exactly six weeks with his previous elbow injury in May, so it’s feasible this will be closer to an eight-week recovery — assuming everything goes well — this time around. That would put him back around the start of September.

Mariners activated OF Julio Rodríguez from the 7-day concussion injured list.

Rodríguez returns to Seattle’s lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Giants at T-Mobile Park after missing just over two weeks recovering from a concussion, but will begin his second half as the designated hitter, with Luke Raley handling center field. The 25-year-old franchise cornerstone was hitting .259/.323/.424 with 14 home runs, 40 RBI and 12 steals in 378 plate appearances across 87 games to open the season. His presence should provide an immediate lift for Seattle’s offense.

Mariners designated INF/OF Miles Mastrobuoni for assignment.

Mastrobuoni loses his spot on Seattle’s roster with Julio Rodríguez back from the concussion injured list for Saturday’s game against the Giants. The versatile 30-year-old hit just .192 (5-for-26) with zero homers or steals in 13 games after making his season debut back in early June.

Athletics designated 1B Joey Meneses for assignment.

Meneses hit .150 (3-for-20) with two RBI during a nine-game stint with the Athletics before they decided to give power-hitting prospect Tommy White a shot at first base instead while franchise cornerstone Nick Kurtz is on the shelf with a thumb sprain.

Diamondbacks recalled C Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno.

Del Castillo gets the call to replace an injured Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (adductor) on Arizona’s active roster. The 26-year-old is unlikely to play enough to matter for fantasy purposes and was hitting just .185 (28-for-151) with five homers and 23 RBI across 51 games this season before being shipped to the minors back on July 6.

Diamondbacks selected the contract of RHP Gerardo Carrillo from Triple-A Reno.

Carrillo has been added to Arizona’s 40-man roster after posting a solid 4.23 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 56/27 K/BB ratio across 42 1/3 innings for Triple-A Reno this season. The 27-year-old was one of the ancillary components of the Max Scherzer and Trea Turner deal between the Dodgers and Nationals at the trade deadline back in 2021. He wound up undergoing Tommy John surgery and never pitched in the majors for Washington. He’ll be making his big-league debut when he gets into a game.

Diamondbacks placed OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain.

No word yet regarding how much time Gurriel will miss, but he’s likely facing a multi-week absence. His departure from Arizona’s outfield mix creates space of Ryan Waldschmidt and Max Kepler to play virtually everyday between center and left field, respectively. The 32-year-old impending free agent has hit .207 (36-for-174) with two homers, 21 RBI and one steal in 189 plate appearances over 47 games since making his season debut back on April 18.

Esmerlyn Valdez launched a two-run homer, propelling the Pirates to a 7-1 win over the Guardians in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

The magic continues. Valdez picked up right where he left off prior to the All-Star break, lifting a towering fly ball off Guardians starter Gavin Williams that just kept on carrying into the right-field seats to give Pittsburgh a 4-1 advantage in the sixth inning. The 22-year-old slugging prospect has gone deep a staggering 11 times in just 29 games to open his big-league career. He’s going to cool off at some point in the near future since he’s striking out nearly 40 percent of the time and running a BABIP in the .400 range, but he’s clearly going to keep hitting for power, which should keep him fantasy-relevant until further notice.

Travis Bazzana scalded an RBI triple in the opening contest of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Pirates.

Bazzana supplied Cleveland’s lone run during the front-end of the twin bill when he drilled a 101-mph RBI triple into the right-field corner off Pirates starter Jared Jones with two outs in the third inning. It was his lone hit in four at-bats out of the leadoff spot as the Guardians managed just six hits combined in their second-half lid-lifter.
