Mariners optioned RHP Cody Bolton to Triple-A Tacoma; reassigned INF Michael Arroyo, LHP Jhonathan Díaz, RHP Adonis Medina, RHP Luis F. Castillo, C Jacob Nottingham and C Nick Raposo to minor league camp.

Bolton was the lone player from Seattle’s 40-man roster exiting big-league camp in the latest round of cuts. Arroyo is one of the Mariners’ top prospects and should reach Double-A at some point in the next few months. Díaz and Medina figure to make it to Seattle at some point as emergency stopgap options.

Bassitt underwent imaging on his ailing back and it sounds like there’s a chance he doesn’t make his next start against the Mariners on Monday. He made an early exit from his previous start against the Red Sox with lower back tightness. There should be a final decision on his status at some point later this weekend.

Garrett Whitlock (knee) will make a minor league rehab appearance on Saturday for Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock has made a rapid recovery after hitting the injured list with knee inflammation back in late May. The 29-year-old high-leverage specialist figures to make it back to Boston’s bullpen at some point next week, possibly as early as Monday’s series opener against the Rays.

Chandler Simpson (thumb) is out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Marlins.

Rays manager Kevin Cash divulged Friday that Simpson has been playing through a thumb contusion that he suffered earlier this week. The 25-year-old speedster figures to avoid a trip to the injured list, but that’s hardly a lock. He’ll get some extra time off to rest and hopefully put the issue to bed. Richie Palacios is in left field with Victor Mesa Jr. in the opposite corner on Saturday afternoon. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into Sunday’s series finale in Miami.

Hunter Brown

HOU Starting Pitcher #58

Hunter Brown (elbow) will make another minor league rehab start on Wednesday for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters Brown will need at least one additional tune-up before returning to the club’s rotation in mid-June. The 27-year-old fantasy ace threw just 57 pitches over 4 1/3 innings during his latest rehab outing earlier this week, so it makes sense for him to continue building up his pitch count before returning to Houston’s rotation.

Curtis Mead

WSH 1st Baseman #45

Curtis Mead is back in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Diamondbacks.

Mead returns to the second spot in Washington’s lineup to face Arizona lefty Eduardo Rodriguez after spending Friday’s contest on the bench. The 25-year-old has taken over as the club’s starting third baseman back in mid-May and hasn’t looked back, hitting .278 (15-for-54) with four homers and 11 RBI over 15 games during that span. He’s worthy of a speculative roster spot in leagues where he’s still on the waiver wire given his recent production, everyday role and former prospect status.

Ildemaro Vargas

AZ 1st Baseman #6
Ildemaro Vargas (general soreness) remains out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Nationals.

Vargas came off the bench as a defensive replacement during Friday’s series opener, which is an encouraging sign. The 34-year-old will get some extra time off to recover after a serious collision with Dodgers slugger Max Muncy earlier this week. He suffered multiple bruises, but X-rays came back negative. It’ll be rookie LuJames Groover drawing another start at first base in his absence.

Yankees selected the contract of C Ali Sánchez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Sánchez provides New York with a bit more offensive upside against left-handed pitching from their backup catcher spot over J.C. Escarra, who was shipped to the minors following Friday’s contest. The 29-year-old journeyman has appeared in 50 games between five different teams since 2020. He’s the textbook definition of a journeyman backstop in the modern era.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Drey Jameson from Triple-A Reno.

Jameson gets the call to join Arizona’s relief mix after posting an underwhelming 7.33 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 23/12 K/BB ratio across 23 1/3 innings as a reliever for Triple-A Reno this season. The 28-year-old former prospect’s career was derailed by a Tommy John procedure that he underwent during the late stages of the 2023 campaign.

Diamondbacks optioned RHP Kade Strowd to Triple-A Reno.

The big surprise here is that Strowd checked out fine after being lifted from Friday’s game against the Nationals because he couldn’t feel the baseball or throw it where he wanted to, according to Arizona manager Torey Lovullo. Clearly, those comments were performance-related. The 28-year-old walked three batters and allowed one run during his lone inning of work.
