If he can stay healthy from there, the 24-year-old Mathews is likely to make his major league debut sometime this season. He struggled in three Triple-A starts before going down last month, but he finished 8-5 with a 2.76 ERA and a 202/.49 K/BB in 143 1/3 innings between four minor league stops last season.

Elder was in complete control for this entire start. He retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced before the Marlins scratched their lone run across in the fifth on a walk, double, and groundout. Then, he cruised through his final two frames to complete seven innings for the first time in nearly three months. He used his cutter to force a heap of lazy pop-ups and put this strong outing together while only forcing four total swings-and-misses. He now has a 3.69 ERA through 126 2/3 innings this season and is scheduled for a two-start week against the Mets and Diamondbacks coming up.

Pagán recorded one strikeout in a perfect ninth inning. It was his 13th save of the season. He continues to be a steady option in the ninth inning for the Reds.

Fuentes was called upon with two outs in the eighth inning with the Braves leading by three, two runners, and Otto Lopez coming to the plate. He forced a first-pitch ground out to escape that jam before working a clean ninth inning to secure his second save. Usual closer Raisel Iglesias threw 20 pitches on Tuesday, so this was just the Braves trying to get him a night off. Fuentes certainly looked the part though.

Baldwin’s two-run single capped off a three-run second inning that gave the Braves all the breathing room they’d need in a win over the Marlins. That pushed him to 59 RBI through just 91 games this season while a good chunk of his games have come as a lead-off hitter. He also has 20 home runs and a .272/.363/.462 slash line as he’s emerged as one of the best young hitters in the game.

The Marlins mustered just three total hits in this one and Marsee was responsible for the lone extra-base hit of the bunch. His season has been a massive disappointment thus far with just a .199 batting average, six home runs, and 19 stolen bases. Strong defense in center field keeps him in the lineup everyday, so there’s a chance he can still turn things around.

All of Pérez’s strengths and weaknesses were on display in this tantalizing start. His nine strikeouts matched a season-high and his 18 swings-and-misses were one shy of the same feat. He forced at least three whiffs with four different pitches and his whole repertoire looked nasty. Yet, the command of his secondary stuff wavered here and he didn’t trust them enough in when he needed to. Case and point, three of the four runs he allowed came in the second inning. He allowed three hits and a walk that frame and between all four plate appearances, he threw two combined breaking balls. Part of that is because some of those hitters were left-handed, but he went away from his changeup too quickly during a nine-pitch battle against Ozzie Albies that ended in a walk and started the rally. Nevertheless, Pérez has been on a tear since coming off the injured list in late June with 49 strikeouts, 14 walks, and a 2.30 ERA across 47 innings. He’s lined up for a two-start week coming up against the Pirates and Reds.

Lowder gave up four hits, walked two and struck out three. He improved to 4-7 with the win. Lowder allowed a solo home run to Lawrence Butler in the first inning and a run on back-to-back hits in the sixth inning. Otherwise, the Athletics didn’t score. He has a 5.26 ERA on the year. Lowder is lined up to face the White Sox on the road next week.

Hill was down for several minutes being attended to by Philadelphia’s training staff following a hard collision with the center-field wall attempting to rob CJ Abrams of an extra-base hit. The positive news is that he was able to get to his feet and walk off under his own power. There should be an update on his status following the contest.

This certainly explains why Daniel Duarte got the call to close out the Guardians with a one-run lead in the 10th inning. Williams hasn’t pitched since throwing 14 pitches in a non-save situation over the weekend. Green added that they expect him to be available for Thursday’s contest, which is encouraging news for fantasy managers.

Mayo’s home run was his 15th of the year. He hit a solo shot off Reid Detmers in the fourth inning. Mayo is 14-for-53 (.264) with five home runs, 11 runs scored and 10 RBI since the beginning of July.
