Matt Chapman (abdomen) began swinging a bat on Friday for the first time since landing on the injured list on July 1 with an abdominal strain.

Giants’ manager Tony Vitello told reporters on Friday that Chapman won’t be ready to return at any point during the team’s current road trip, but could be ready at the start of their next homestand which begins on July 24. Casey Schmitt will continue to man the hot corner in Chapman’s absence.

Max Fried (elbow) threw 52 pitches over three innings in his first minor league rehab start at Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

The 32-year-old southpaw allowed two runs on five hits over his three frames while striking out three batters. He threw 32 of his 52 pitches for strikes in the contest and did not walk a batter. He’s likely to require at least one additional rehab start, but if all goes well his next time out he could then be cleared to return to the Yankees’ rotation.

Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that surgery is not currently being considered for injured right-hander Zac Gallen.

Gallen will get a second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Monday to map out a timeline for his return to the mound. Things could obviously change in the coming weeks, but it sounds like the Diamondbacks are holding out hope that Gallen can avoid surgery and return to action at some point before the end of the 2026 season.

Javier Báez (ankle) has started taking live batting practice and is scheduled to complete a return to play baserunning session on Saturday.

It sounds like the 33-year-old defensive wizard is finally making progress in his recovery from a high-grade ankle sprain that has had him sidelined since the end of April. For the first time it sounds like there’s optimism that he could join the Tigers at some point during the second half of the season.

Giants designated C Eric Haase for assignment.

It’s not the first time the 33-year-old has been through the DFA cycle. Haase hit just .162/.235/.365 with four homers and nine RBI in 84 plate appearances with the Giants. He’ll likely pass through waivers unclaimed and then get to make the decision on whether to remain with the Giants at Triple-A Sacramento or attempt to latch on elsewhere.
