Báez is 4-for-7 with a steal in the early going. He could open up as Detroit’s primary shortstop or in more of a job share with Zach McKinstry, depending on how much the Tigers want McKinstry playing elsewhere. That’s assuming top prospect Kevin McGonigle doesn’t just up and overtake them both.

The Yankees have yet to put a timeline on their star southpaw’s return, but it’s very encouraging that he’s just dealing with a bone bruise and not any significant structural damage. No word yet on how the Yankees plan to fill the new void in their rotation, but it’s possible Elmer Rodriguez could return from Triple-A to take his place.

Addison Barger (elbow) is expected to resume hitting and throwing early next week.

Blue Jays’ skipper John Schneider noted on Friday that the Jays don’t expect Barger to be out for much longer than the minimum stint on the injured list due to inflammation in his elbow. It sounds like it’s possible he may not even require a minor league rehab assignment before returning to the Blue Jays’ lineup.

Sterlin Thompson

COL Left Fielder #30

Rockies recalled OF Sterlin Thompson from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 24-year-old outfielder was off to an outstanding start at the Triple-A level, slashing .344/.491/.496 with four homers, 27 RBI, eight stolen bases and a 28/30 K/BB ratio across 161 plate appearances. He’s unlikely to see enough action with the Rockies to warrant any mixed league consideration.

Sammy Peralta

COL Relief Pitcher #57

Rockies recalled LHP Sammy Peralta from Triple-A Albuquerque.

The 28-year-old southpaw will add a fresh arm to the Rockies’ bullpen mix for at least a few days while the Rockies figure out how to cover Chase Dollander’s spot in the rotation. Peralta has posted a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 14/5 K/BB ratio across 19 innings at the Triple-A level this season.

Rockies placed INF/OF Tyler Freeman on the paternity list.

Freeman will be away from the team for the weekend as he welcomes a new addition to his family. Sterlin Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move on Friday.

Rockies placed RHP Chase Dollander on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain.

We still haven’t heard word on the results of his MRI exam and how much time the 24-year-old right-hander may stand to miss. Sammy Peralta was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move to add a fresh arm to the Rockies’ bullpen while they figure out how to handle Dollander’s spot in the rotation.

Jose Altuve

HOU 2nd Baseman #27
Jose Altuve is not in the Astros’ starting lineup for Friday evening’s tilt against the Rangers.

There haven’t been any reports of any lingering ailments for the 36-year-old infielder, so we’ll assume that this is just a regular day of rest for Altuve. Brice Matthews will start in his place at second base and will bat leadoff for the Astros against Rangers’ right-hander Jack Leiter.

Grayson Rodriguez

LAA Starting Pitcher #21

Grayson Rodriguez (shoulder) is set to make his highly anticipated Angels’ debut on Sunday against the Dodgers.

The 26-year-old right-hander has worked his way back from a shoulder ailment that cost him the first seven weeks of the season. When he takes the hill against the Dodgers on Sunday it will be his first time on a big league mound since July of 2024. Rodriguez struck out 11 batters over 4 2/3 innings in his final minor league rehab start and shouldn’t have any major workload restrictions in Sunday’s debut.

Nasim Nuñez

WSH 2nd Baseman #26
Nasim Nuñez is not in the Nationals’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Orioles.

It appears to be a routine night off for the speedy infielder, though he’s hitting just .202/.310/.226 through his first 149 plate appearances on the season so this could start to become a regular occurrence. Jorbit Vivas will start in his place at second base and bat seventh for the Nationals against Shane Baz and the O’s.

MIN Center Fielder #25

Byron Buxton is not in Minnesota’s starting lineup on Friday against the Brewers.

Not good, to say the least. It’s the second game in a row Buxton has missed. We haven’t seen a real update about him just yet, but we’re sure the Twins will say something in the coming hours.
