Both players were always seen as longshots to crack a crowded Opening Day roster, so there’s no real surprise here. Encarnacion-Strand, who was the Reds’ Opening Day first baseman in each of the past two seasons, will have to prove his health and produce at the Triple-A level before earning another shot in Cincinnati.

González will open the season in the minors after posting a strong 2.66 ERA and 25/12 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 innings over 16 relief appearances for the White Sox last year. Sandlin was the key piece Chicago acquired for taking on the remainder of Jordan Hicks’ albatross contract from the Red Sox last month.

Guardians optioned 3B Angel Genao and OF Kahlil Watson to Triple-A Columbus.

One of the top prospects in Cleveland’s system, Genao possesses strong bat-to-ball skills and is starting to add some over-the-fence pop to his profile. There’s still some work to be done but he’s close to arriving in the big leagues, especially after being added to the Guardians’ 40-man roster during the offseason.

Brewers optioned C Jeferson Quero to Triple-A Nashville.

Quero’s path to a spot on Milwaukee’s season-opening roster became non-existent once Gary Sánchez was brought back on a one-year deal. The 23-year-old is one of the better catching prospects in the game and figures to arrive in the big leagues later this year.

Sammy Peralta

MIL Relief Pitcher #57

Brewers optioned LHP Sammy Peralta to Triple-A Nashville.

Peralta will open the regular season back at Triple-A after being claimed off waivers from the Angels last October. The 27-year-old lefty posted a serviceable 5.12 ERA (5.05 xERA), 1.71 WHIP and 37/24 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings in the majors since 2023.

Merrill Kelly

AZ Starting Pitcher #29

Merrill Kelly (back) will make his first Cactus League start on Friday.

Kelly will make his spring debut after completing a live batting practice session without any issues over the weekend. The 37-year-old veteran was shut down from throwing temporarily with a back issue last month. The general expectation is that he’ll be ready to pitch at the back-end of Arizona’s rotation to open the regular season. He recorded a pristine 3.52 ERA (4.15 xERA), 1.11 WHIP and 167/48 K/BB ratio across 184 innings last year between the Diamondbacks and Rangers.

Tyler Glasnow

LAD Starting Pitcher #31

Tyler Glasnow pitched 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts Tuesday in the Dodgers’ 4-1 win over the D-backs.

Jordan Lawlar led off the top of the first with a homer, but Glasnow retired 13 of 15 batters afterwards, getting four strikeouts with his curveball. There’s an argument that Glasnow is a little overrated for fantasy purposes at this point, as he’s still an injury risk and probably doesn’t have quite as much upside as he used to. He’s looking strong right now, though, with his velocity right at his 2025 norms.

Brandon Pfaadt

AZ Starting Pitcher #32

Brandon Pfaadt allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings and struck out four Tuesday versus the Dodgers.

Pfaadt’s nine sweepers today got all of four of his strikeouts. Dodgers hitters swung at seven of them and missed six times, with the exception turning into a groundout. In all, Pfaadt allowed just two hits, a double from Freddie Freeman in the first and a single from Mookie Betts in the third.

Jonathan Loaisiga

AZ Relief Pitcher #43

Jonathan Loáisiga pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts against the Dodgers on Tuesday.

The oft-injured Loáisiga is throwing well this spring, having given up two runs in four innings, and seems like a good bet to make the Diamondbacks. He might well prove to be their best reliever while healthy, which could lead to save chances early on.

Jordan Lawlar

AZ Shortstop #10

Jordan Lawlar hit his fourth homer Tuesday off the Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow.

Lawlar and Ryan Waldschmidt collided in the outfield during the game, with Lawlar’s inexperience in the outfield and center, in particular, likely the cause, but both were fine afterwards. It’s not official yet, but all indications are that Lawlar has locked up center field in Arizona while hitting .333/.455/.815 in 33 plate appearances this spring.

Victor Mederos

LAA Starting Pitcher #58

Angels optioned RHP Victor Mederos to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Mederos won’t break camp in the majors after being hit hard in a handful of Cactus League outings. The 24-year-old made five appearances (three starts) for the Angels last year and will continue serving as emergency depth on the doorstep of the big leagues.
