Casey Mize was demolished during Friday’s Grapefruit League loss to the Pirates, surrendering six runs on six hits over his three-plus frames.
Mize also issued four free passes on the evening while recording a pair of strikeouts. After a scoreless first inning, the Pirates tagged him for two runs in each of the next three frames — including a two-run blast by Jhostynxon Garcia in the third. Mize threw just 43 of his 67 pitches for strikes in the ballgame, getting five whiffs and posting a miserable CSW of just 15 percent. He’ll try to right the ship and improve upon his unsightly 7.15 ERA his next time out.

Corbin Carroll is not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Mets.
It will be Jorge Barrosa in right field and batting ninth for the Diamondbacks as they get their superstar a rest day on Thursday. Gabriel Moreno is also sitting this one out for Arizona, leaving Adrian Del Castillo and Jose Fernandez as the 4-5 hitters against Nolan McLean.
Fantasy fallout from Lopez, Soler suspensions
James Schiano examines the fantasy implications of suspensions handed out to Reynaldo Lopez and Jorge Soler, weighing in on how they impact Braves pitchers and the Angels' outfield.
  • NYM Catcher #4
Francisco Alvarez is DHing and batting sixth against the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
It’s the first DH appearance for Alvarez this year, both telling of how good he’s been at the plate (.300/.400/.633 in 37 plate appearances so far) and how bereft of depth the Mets are without Juan Soto. Jorge Polanco will get the day off.
  • TB Starting Pitcher #65
Rays optioned RHP Jesse Scholtens to Triple-A Durham.
Scholtens threw nearly five innings in relief yesterday, so the Rays will pick up a fresh arm ahead of Friday’s game against the Yankees. The 32-year-old allowed four hits and struck out four while allowing no runs during the outing on Wednesday. It lowered his career MLB ERA to 5.05.
  • MIA Left Fielder #18
Marlins OF Griffin Conine (knee) left Thursday’s game in some discomfort after diving for a ball in the sixth inning.
Heriberto Hernández took over in left field. It looked like Conine grabbed his left knee or hamstring after throwing the ball in. The Marlins soon updated that it was “left knee discomfort.” Conine is off to a .300/.391/.650 start for Miami with two homers and two steals, and it was looking like he’d be the strong side of a platoon in left field with Hernández if he kept that up.
  • ATH Right Fielder #25
Brent Rooker (right flank discomfort) left Thursday’s game against the Yankees in the first inning.
Rooker looked visibly uncomfortable after a first-inning swing. The Athletics later updated that Rooker is suffering from right flank discomfort. The Athletics replaced him with Lawrence Butler. We’ll see what comes of this, but Rooker could miss real time.
  • HOU Relief Pitcher #46
Astros sent RHP Roddery Muñoz outright to Triple-A Sugar Land.
He was a Rule 5 pick, but apparently the Reds did not accept him back after losing him. Muñoz will look to rebuild his value in the Space Cowboys’ bullpen.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #43
    Dodgers released RHP Nick Nastrini.
Nastrini carried a 54.00 ERA in three games with Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2025, he walked seven and struck out nobody. He made one appearance for Double-A Tulsa and walked three batters without recording an out. The 26-year-old will look to catch on elsewhere, but it’s hard to believe there’s much of a future here if he can’t stop walking batters.
  • MIN 2nd Baseman #15
Luke Keaschall isn’t in Minnesota’s starting lineup against the Tigers on Thursday.
The righty will get the day game off instead of facing RHP Jack Flaherty. Kody Clemens will slide into Keaschall’s spot at second base, while Josh Bell moves up the order to hit third. Keaschall has hits in his last three games, but is off to a rough .208/.264/.292 start with just one homer and two stolen bases.
  • ATH Catcher #23
Shea Langeliers is not in the starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the Yankees.
Langeliers gets a rare off-day against LHP Ryan Weathers. Austin Wynns will draw the start for the Athletics and bat seventh. Langeliers is off to a .289/.333/.644 start in 11 games, and is tied with three other players for the MLB lead with five homers.
  • NYY Starting Pitcher #55
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Carlos Rodón threw a 40-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday.
No next step for Rodón has been determined yet, but it’s good news that he made it through a bullpen session. Rodón’s hamstring injury is an additional deterrent to his return from bone spurs in his elbow, but it shouldn’t be long before he begins a rehab assignment.
