With Vaughn Grissom back, Oswald Peraza is out of the Angels’ lineup for a second straight game Saturday against the Reds.
Peraza sat in favor of Adam Frazier against a righty on Friday. Today, it’s Grissom getting the nod against a lefty. None of it bodes well for Peraza, who followed up a hot spring with a mediocre start to the season; he’s batting .216/.275/.351 in 41 plate appearances after starting 11 of the Angels’ first 13 games.

2025 first-round pick Seth Hernandez is getting a promotion to High-A Greensboro.
Great news for Florida State League hitters. The 19-year-old Hernandez was simply overwhelming them with 50 strikeouts and 13 hits allowed in 28 innings. His ERA stood at 0.96.
Garcia drives in Caglianone to tie things up
With the Royals down one and Jac Caglianone on second, Maikel Garcia made sure to capitalize, driving him in with a hard-hit single up the middle to tie things up against the Tigers.
  • SF Left Fielder #17
Heliot Ramos homered, doubled and scored three times Sunday as the Giants outlasted the Pirates 7-6 in 12 innings.
The third run he scored was the winning run in the 12th, though he achieved that by grounding out softly with the bases loaded to end the 11th. Before that, Ramos collected his fourth homer and 10th double. His .743 OPS ranks second to Casey Schmitt on the Giants, and he’s first on the team with 17 runs scored and tied with Schmitt for first in RBI with 18. It’d be nice if he played better defense in left, but he hasn’t been one of the Giants’ problems this season.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #54
Tyler Mahle surrendered four runs in 5 2/3 innings Sunday against the Pirates.
Mahle fanned eight, beating his previous season high for strikeouts by two. However, he also gave up two homers. He’s allowed a total of eight homers on the season, but oddly enough, they’ve all come between three of his eight starts. He wasn’t involved in the decision today, so he stays 1-4 with a 5.18 ERA. A tough road start in Sacramento is next on his schedule.
  • SF Starting Pitcher #44
Caleb Kilian got the eighth in a tie game against the Pirates on Sunday and pitched a scoreless inning despite walking two.
He had to deal with a Ryan O’Hearn error to start the inning, but he induced a double-play ball after the first walk and then got a flyout to end the inning. Keaton Winn again entered early today, getting three outs between the sixth and seventh. Joel Peguero might have closed if the Giants had taken a lead. He pitched a scoreless ninth and then was charged with two runs, including the automatic runner, while getting one out in the 10th. With Ryan Walker officially out of the picture, Kilian is probably the most rosterable reliever in the Giants pen right now. However, Erik Miller should also enter that mix when he comes off the IL.
  • PIT Starting Pitcher #36
Bubba Chandler worked five innings and allowed two runs Sunday in a no-decision against the Giants.
Chandler reigned in the walks today, issuing just one. However, he also wound up with only three strikeouts and a 22 percent CSW. The Pirates ended up dropped to 2-6 in his starts, in part because they have to ask for four or five innings from the pen every time he pitches. He’ll almost certainly get better, but he’s been quite the liability through eight turns. He’ll pitch at home against the Phillies next.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #31
Gregory Soto retired all four batters he faced in the eighth and ninth in a tie game Sunday against the Giants.
Dennis Santana got the first two outs in the eighth, but he allowed a couple of hits in the process, which led to the Pirates replacing him with Soto against lefty Drew Gilbert. Quite simply, Soto is the reliever the Pirates have the most faith in at the moment.
  • PIT Shortstop #85
Konnor Griffin hit his third homer and walked versus the Giants on Sunday.
Griffin’s homer was a 110-mph liner to center. He’s 11-for-34 with five extra-base hits and five walks in nine games this month, raising his OPS from .631 to .721.
  • SD Right Fielder #21
Nick Castellanos hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth as the Padres came back to beat the Cardinals 3-2 on Sunday.
Manny Machado’s sac fly won the game in the 10th. Before that, Castellanos deposited a 98.5-mph sinker from Riley O’Brien into the seats in left to break up a shutout bid with two outs in the ninth. It was his second at-bat off the bench after he was inserted as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. Castellanos is sitting at .192/.231/.329 with two homers in 78 plate appearances. His roster status should still be pretty shaky, but it’s helping him right now that Miguel Andujar is struggling of late.
  • SD Starting Pitcher #10
Walker Buehler pitched six innings of two-run ball Sunday in a no-decision against the Cardinals.
Buehler matched his season low with two strikeouts, but he was effective in his second quality start of the season. He remains 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA overall, and there just doesn’t seem to be much of a ceiling here with his velocity down three mph from his peak. Maybe he’ll be good for a few more strikeouts while starting in Seattle next weekend.
  • STL Starting Pitcher #62
Kyle Leahy blanked the Padres for five innings in a no-decision Sunday.
Leahy allowed two hits, walked four and struck out five in the 95-pitch outing. The two longest flies against him would have been homers in 12 and six of 30 ballparks, respectively, but they were both outs today in Petco. Leahy has allowed just one run in his two starts this month, lowering his ERA from 5.52 to 4.31. However, he needs to become more efficient; he’s recorded a total of two outs in the sixth inning in his eight starts. He’ll face the Royals next weekend.
