Cardinals OF prospect Joshua Báez went 2-for-4 with his 16th home run of the season on Thursday for Triple-A Memphis.

Báez has been hotter than the surface of the sun, blasting five round-trippers over his last three games, including a pair of multi-homer performances. The 22-year-old top prospect has gone deep 10 times since the start of May and is hitting .293 (27-for-92) with just 29 strikeouts during that 22-game span. He’s going to strike out quite a bit while acclimating to everyday life in the majors, but his power/speed combination will make him an impactful fantasy contributor right away. It feels like only a matter of time before the Cardinals decide that he’s ready for his first opportunity in the majors, which makes Báez a viable stash in deeper mixed leagues.

Ben Rice is out of the Yankees lineup Saturday against the Cubs and left-hander David Peterson.

It’s Rice’s first time out of the lineup since June 26. With Rice getting the night off and injuries being such a factor, this really looks like a spring training lineup from the Yankees: LF Max Schuemann, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, DH Amed Rosario, RF Jasson Domínguez, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr., SS Anthony Volpe, CF Spencer Jones, C Ali Sánchez and 3B José Caballero.
McClanahan could go on short IL stint
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan left his last start early with back tightness and Eric Samulski thinks a short trip to the IL is in the cards to let him rest for a potential trip to the postseason.

Jazz Chisholm is back at second base on Saturday against the Cubs.

Chisholm left Thursday’s game in the 11th inning with leg cramps and didn’t play Friday. He’s batting fifth against a lefty tonight.

Matt Chapman is still struggling to run while dealing with his abdominal strain and will meet with Giants doctors on Sunday.

Chapman was supposed to miss the minimum 10 days after going on the injured list a month ago, but he obviously hasn’t progressed as hoped. Christian Koss will continue to fill in at third for now.

Brewers activated OF Brandon Lockridge from the 10-day injured list.

Lockridge had been out since May 8, when he crashed into a corner of the wall attempting a sliding catch and suffered a severe leg laceration. He’ll replace the traded Blake Perkins and get starts in the Brewers outfield against lefties.

Even though the Padres are facing a right-hander, Gavin Sheets is again on the bench Saturday against the Giants.

Sheets already sat versus lefties on Thursday and Friday, but now he’s sitting in favor Luis Rengifo versus a righty, too. Sheets is currently in a 5-for-50 slump. He hasn’t had an extra-base hit since July 2.

Willson Contreras is out of the Boston lineup Saturday after getting hit on the helmet by a pitch in Friday’s game.

The Red Sox have Nick Sogard playing first base against the Dodgers tonight.

Athletics selected the contract of LHP Ben Bowden from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Bowden, who had a 4.22 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the A’s last year, will be making his 2026 debut. The 31-year-old had a 5.40 ERA in 32 relief appearances for Las Vegas this season.

Athletics optioned RHP Luis Morales to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Morales entered with the A’s down 3-1 in the eighth last night in the eventual 13-1 loss to the Tigers, so you can guess how that went. A nice surprise in nine starts as a rookie last year, he has a 14.06 ERA in two starts and three relief appearances in the majors this season.
