Oneil Cruz went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer and two steals against the Twins on Saturday.

Cruz blew the game open with a three-run blast off Bailey Ober in the second inning. He added a steal after reaching on a groundout in the sixth, then walked and stole his second base in the eighth. The 27-year-old outfielder has delivered on his upside so far, slashing .258/.327/.468 with 13 homers, 40 runs scored, 40 RBI, and 19 steals across 257 plate appearances.

JR Ritchie will likely be called up to start Sunday for the Braves as a result of Reynaldo López’s knee inflammation.

Ritchie had been scheduled to start for Triple-A Gwinnett tonight, but he was scratched. With Sunday’s scheduled starter, Martín Pérez, instead pitching tonight, Ritchie tomorrow seems like the obvious move.
McClanahan could go on short IL stint
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane McClanahan left his last start early with back tightness and Eric Samulski thinks a short trip to the IL is in the cards to let him rest for a potential trip to the postseason.

Padres signed RHP J.P. France to a minor league contract.

France was just released by the Astros. He was a big help to Houston in 2023, when he went 11-6 with a 3.83 ERA, but he injured his shoulder afterwards and has pitched just 10 times in the majors since the beginning of 2024. He had a 3.72 ERA and a 39/25 K/BB in 36 1/3 innings while working as a reliever for Triple-A Round Rock this season.

The Guardians will have Blake Perkins report to Triple-A after acquiring him from the Brewers on Saturday.

Whether Craig Yoho joins Perkins in Columbus or gets a spot in the Cleveland bullpen is still being decided. Perkins makes some sense for the Guardians as a plus defensive outfielder who can start against lefties, but they aren’t currently willing to send down David Fry or Kyle Manzardo to make room for him.

Reynaldo López has been scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against the Nationals because of left knee inflammation.

Martín Pérez, Sunday’s scheduled starter, will face the Nationals in his place. As a result, the Nats have altered their lineup to sit Daylen Lile and Jorbit Vivas in favor of Andres Chapparo and Brady House.

Nick Kurtz, who is still having some difficulty with his right thumb, is out of the A’s lineup on Saturday.

He’ll likely be available off the bench. Kurtz made a surprisingly quick return from the capsule sprain he suffered last month, but he’s not 100 percent. Hopefully, it will get better with time, but there may come a time at which it no longer makes sense for him to play through it.

Jacob Wilson is DHing for a third straight game Saturday while dealing with a lower body issue.

The left shoulder that he hurt in late June also remains something of a problem. Wilson isn’t currently hitting well enough to really justify the starts at DH, but the A’s don’t have much to lose by keeping him there and it’s not like he’s blocking anyone.

Ben Rice is out of the Yankees lineup Saturday against the Cubs and left-hander David Peterson.

It’s Rice’s first time out of the lineup since June 26. With Rice getting the night off and injuries being such a factor, this really looks like a spring training lineup from the Yankees: LF Max Schuemann, 1B Paul Goldschmidt, DH Amed Rosario, RF Jasson Domínguez, 2B Jazz Chisholm Jr., SS Anthony Volpe, CF Spencer Jones, C Ali Sánchez and 3B José Caballero.

Jazz Chisholm is back at second base on Saturday against the Cubs.

Chisholm left Thursday’s game in the 11th inning with leg cramps and didn’t play Friday. He’s batting fifth against a lefty tonight.

Matt Chapman is still struggling to run while dealing with his abdominal strain and will meet with Giants doctors on Sunday.

Chapman was supposed to miss the minimum 10 days after going on the injured list a month ago, but he obviously hasn’t progressed as hoped. Christian Koss will continue to fill in at third for now.

Brewers activated OF Brandon Lockridge from the 10-day injured list.

Lockridge had been out since May 8, when he crashed into a corner of the wall attempting a sliding catch and suffered a severe leg laceration. He’ll replace the traded Blake Perkins and get starts in the Brewers outfield against lefties.
