Sandy Alcantara pitched eight innings and picked up his sixth win against the Pirates on Friday, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven.

Strong work from the veteran in lowering his ERA to 4.25. Alcantara did allow a pair of solo homers — one to Endy Rodríguez and another to Brandon Lowe late as the score was out of hand — but continued to pump gas as he averaged 98.1 mph on the fastball. The whiff rates continue to be pretty low and batters simply aren’t chasing anything against him anymore, but Alcantara gives the Marlins length and should be in line for plenty of wins if the Marlins can put up runs like this. He’ll get a matchup against the Phillies next week.

Rays acquired RHP Tyler Wells from the Orioles for RHP Michael Forret.

Wells bolsters Tampa Bay’s relief depth heading into the home stretch after thriving as a full-time reliever with the division-rival Orioles this season, posting a solid 2.67 ERA across 54 innings of work. He’s an interesting pickup for the Rays, who have had plenty of success with turning unheralded names into elite relievers in the recent past.

Orioles acquired RHP Michael Forret from the Rays for RHP Tyler Wells.

Forret heads back to Baltimore after being sent to Tampa Bay a couple months earlier in the Shane Baz trade. Clearly, the Orioles felt comfortable bringing him back in exchange for Well, who has found success since converting to a full-time reliever.

Rays acquired OF Jack Suwinski from the Dodgers for C Hunter Feduccia.

The textbook definition of a zero-risk reclamation project, the Rays are willing to roll the dice on Suwinski after getting catcher Liam Hicks from the Marlins, which made Feduccia expendable. The 28-year-old outfielder is just just a couple years removed from a 26-homer campaign at the highest level.

Dodgers acquired C Hunter Feduccia from the Rays for OF Jack Suwinski.

A little additional catching depth can’t hurt, right? The Dodgers are dealing with some razor-thin margins at the position while Will Smith works his way back from a neck injury. Dalton Rushing is also banged up at the moment. Feduccia began his career in Los Angeles and broke into the majors with the Dodgers back in 2024. He’s merely a depth addition.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports the Padres are acquiring Casey Mize from the Tigers.

San Diego manages to fortify its starting rotation, which has been one of the worst in baseball this season, by landing Mize just ahead of the buzzer at the trade deadline. The 29-year-old has battled through lingering groin issues this season, managing to post a stellar 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 85/19 K/BB ratio across 86 2/3 innings of work. He should be ready to return from the injured list to make his Padres debut at some point later this month.

Cubs acquired LHP Braxton Garrett from the Marlins for 1B Jonathon Long and RHP Jace Beck.

Garrett is free from Miami, but the Cubs say he’ll remain in Triple-A for now. He’d struggled in his last two starts for Jacksonville, though he still has a 2.90 ERA and an 83/29 K/BB in 77 2/3 innings for the season. The 28-year-old has a lifetime 4.16 ERA in 65 starts and two relief appearances as a major leaguer. The Cubs will have him under control through 2028.

Marlins acquired 1B Jonathon Long and RHP Jace Beck from the Cubs for
    LHP Braxton Garrett.

Long, 24, is hitting .283/.364/.455 in his second year at Triple-A Iowa. He lacks star potential, but he could prove to be pretty solid at first base and particularly valuable while making a minimum salary the next few years. The Marlins will probably keep him in Triple-A for now, but they should give him a shot pretty soon. Kyle Stowers can move back to the outfield when that happens.

Marlins acquired RHP Jace Beck and 1B Jonathon Long from the Cubs for LHP Braxton Garrett.

Beck, 26, has a whopping 116 strikeouts and a 3.62 ERA in 74 2/3 innings in nine starts and 16 relief appearances between Double- and Triple-A this year. He’s been homer-prone and his control is below average, but with his fastball up to the 94-98 mph range, he might be of some use out of the pen.

The Marlins are acquiring reliever Victor Vodnik from the Rockies for infielder Connor Norby and pitching prospect Aiden May, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

This one comes in right before the deadline as Colorado ships on of their more reliable relievers to Miami for an interesting reclamation project in Norby, who has struggled to find his footing in the majors. He was a notable prospect with the Orioles before being shipped to Miami as part of the Trevor Rogers deal.
